8Gb SD card not recognized in My Computer on Vista

Hi everyone, my first post here. 8)
I have an 8Gb  Sd card, with 2 partitions, first primary FAT16, second primary FAT32. I use the card with CHDK on my S5IS, and it goes OK on camera, but when I insert the card in my laptop, directly to built-in card reader or by an USB card reader, I cannot see the drive in My Computer. I use vista home premium. On another laptop, I can see the card in My Computer, but only the CHDK files, no pictures.
Have I done something wrong?
Thank you!

I don't have:
"start CHDK, call "Swap partitions" from the Misc menu, exit <Alt> mode and power the camera off"
or
"From the CHDK menu, call Miscellaneous stuff -> Debug parameters -> Create card with two partitions"

in my CHDK menu.

I may be mistaken, but CHDK for s5is doesn't seem to have multi partition support so those menu items indeed don't exist for it, meaning you can't swap partitions in-camera. IMO CHDK source code a bit misleading for this part since s5is does boot from a dual partition setup as you've noticed.

Your first computer needs an SDHC card reader, it very likely only has a SD card reader (all cards larger than 4 GiB and most 4 GiB cards are newer SDHC type cards instead of plain old SD). Some card readers can be upgraded to support SDHC, it's worth some googling before you go shopping for a new card reader.

The other computer sees the wrong partition (it sees the tiny CHDK autoboot partition). Windows is utterly stupid and just isn't capable of seeing more than one partition on a removable disk. You need to swap them, but you can't do it with your S5IS.

I have no clue how to swap partitions on Windows, I hope http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CardTricks can do it, or some other method found in threads fe50 posted links above.

Ahh - yes, i see; the multi partition support code is there, but with "CAM_MULTIPART = 0" the create partition & swap partition items are not available...

Cardtricks can't swap the partitions, unfortunately.

@mikiduta:
Working with stupid Windows there are at least 2 possibilities, have a look to my first link again:

Another way for Windows user is to use the sdminste.exe, that's the small installer app from the SDM - you'll find it on the SDM Homepage in the "Common files" package...
When using the sdm installer you should always double check the drive letter before you press any button !

You can also use a special, modified hard disc driver for your card reader to access the drive like a hard disc...http://mind-fields-ahead.blogspot.com/2008/04/canon-s5-is-chdk-hack-step-by-step.html
Both methods should work for you; the SDM Installer (sdminste.exe) is a small Windows GUI app that can swap the partitions - but your PC first must be able to access the SD card, as fudgey said !

Caution: when using the SDM Installer, ALWAYS check the correct drive letter BEFORE you click ANY button, ALWAYS wait at least 10 seconds before you press any button or remove / re-insert the card !

The 2nd method (replacing the Windows driver) may have some side effects, Windows treats the SD card the same way as a removable USB hard disc...

Now I'm really confused. I don't know what's the first step.

On another laptop, I can see the card in My Computer, but only the CHDK files, no pictures.
Use this laptop...

  • Get the SDM Installer: download the SDM common_files.zip package and unzip all the files to an empty folder on your hard disc
  • Insert the SD card in the card reader, start the sdminste.exe from the downloaded package
  • in the SDM installer select your card drive (drive letter)
  • press "Swap partitions" and follow the instructions on the screen
    • ! always wait 10 seconds before you press any button
    • ! first do what the message boxes tells you (remove SD card / re-insert SD card), wait 10 seconds, then click the OK buttons
    • ! after you remove or re-insert the card, always wait 10 seconds, then check always whether the correct drive letter is selected
  • close the SDM installer; the partition with your images now should be the first one...
  • ...so now you can access your files on the SD card work with the Windows explorer as usual

--> To swap back the partitions again, repeat step 3 to 8

You said:

So first you have to solve this CHDK-independend issue to get access to the SD card...
As fudgey said - first make sure your card reader supports SDHC cards, maybe you need a new, cheap USB card reader.
When you plug in the USB card reader, Windows should recognize it & you should see the drive in "data storage management" (run "compmgmt.msc").

OK, so, my personal laptop is a Dell, and it can't see the card in My Computer. My work laptop, an Lenovo can see the card but only the small partition. The Dell recognize the drive in data storage management.
Attached is a printscr from my Dell laptop.
