Camera as regular card reader

Isn't it possible to do something so that the inside-camera SD would be visible as a regular drive on the computer?
I have a Sony DSC U 20 that acts exactly like a card reader, I sometimes actually used it as a card reader for my mobile phone's MS Duo.
the Canon being seen as a camera in the OS rather than a regular drive is mostly a disadvantage. it's slow, has less funtions and you can only access the files in the dcim folder. why on earth is the camera explorer so silly and rudimentary in Windows and why on earth does Canon decide to use it?
I keep moving the SD from the camera to the card reader and back and am worried about damaging the pins inside the camera.
if this feature would be implemented I think it would be pretty useful.

I was going to put in a reply saying you should be using Linux and all your problems would go away - BUT it does the same thing!  I could have sworn I did that before...  I guess the old brain can't remember everything anymore  :(  :(  :(

I don't know enough about the low-level workings of CHDK or the official firmware, but maybe if the right bits of code were added, the camera's appearance to USB hosts could be changed to just look like a storage device...

I think it should be possible. We have access to SD card and can send signals to usb (like in remote control).
All to do is driver which will send some bytes to USB and software in the camera to save it to the card (load it to the USB).

It is possible to remote control camera though ZoomBrowser, so there is a communication over USB cable (can get a preview and alter the camera functions).
