Would it be possible to operate an A720is through a computer (USB) using chdk? (zoom, view, time-lapse etc) like on some other models? And possibly transfer pictures once they have been stored to the card? Much like the the software from http://www.breezesys.com does?

Statement from Canon SDK: As a reminder: PowerShots A410, A420, A430, A450, A460, A470, A530, A540, A550, A560, A570 IS, A580, A590 IS, A610, A630, A650 IS, A700, A710 IS, A720 IS, A1000 IS, A2000 IS, S10, S20, S330, SD10, SD20, SD30, SD40, SD200, SD300, SD400, SD430, SD450, SD500, SD550, SD600, SD630, SD700 IS, SD750, SD770 IS,SD790 IS,SD800 IS, SD850 IS, SD870 IS, SD880 IS, SD890 IS, SD900, SD950 IS, SD990 IS, SD1000, SD1100 IS, SX1 IS, and SX10 IS do not support remote control or video out operation via the SDK.

However, what is possible is to run scripts which respond to power pulses applied to the USB port and do some of what you want (click the shutter or zoom for example). You can't easily do this directly with a computer, but there are several gadgets around which help. For example, it's possible to use an Apple remote (see http://www.canoremote.de/) or the sort of radio control used for model aeroplanes (see http://www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentled/chdk.htm).

This sort of thing works on more or less any CHDK-capable canon.

No, but in the near future, using SDM ... yes !

(it will also be a compile-time option for CHDK).

This is already implemented for the  A620 and the next camera to be tested wil be the A720.

It is also possible for a 'master' camera to send its settings to a 'slave' camera.

The A620 rig is being tested outdoors right now and over the next few days.

Wait, what?! :D

So at least 2, and possibly other non-RC capable cams will enjoy the new make_usb_connection, or something similar? I thought "sense-less" USB units were always a definite no-go; this sounds brilliant. Thanks for asking this, Sam. I had no idea...

Even though it is evening, I have only just checked my postal mail today.
Sure enough, there is a Jiffy bag containing a programmed microcontroller.
Data in is via USB, data out is via the 'Print' LED.
Now I have to make a second photosensor for testing.
Excluding bright light and securing it to the camera are the tricky parts.

This is far too clever to be my work   :)

I knew there was a reason I put a photosensor on my microcontroller :)

Aaahhh .. but is it fast enough and can you exclude bright light ?

If not, both of those can be fixed and hopefully your microcontroller will be able to do something similar.

The 'C' code in the camera is complicated, the code in the ATTiny84 looks even more complicated.

Guess I had better start reading a book   :)
