Hi david,

Can I take this to mean that it's not possible to have two cameras communicating via a USB cable?

I expect you to say "it is not possible" since otherwise SDM would use it!  (I'm thinking about one camera being the "master" and sending its shooting settings to the "slave"...)

So is it because we have not figured out how to do it, or is it a hard limitation of how the hardware and/or USB specification works?  If it's just lack of knowledge I would be keen to search for it, cause I'm really interested by this.  But if you know it is not possible for sure, I'll save my time.

Sorry if these are stupid and/or obvious questions.  I am a bit new to this.

Well, if I were you, I'd just use a PIC with a phototransistor. The PICs are very cheap, like 1-2 bucks a piece. The programmer is 30 bucks or so, but you you will have a lot of fun and much more versatility.

This has been done.
The author has been occupied with other business for the last four weeks but should resume soon.

The master camera blinks the blue led to communicate with an ATTiny PIC.
The PIC then sends the settings to the slave using USB.
The cameras can be highly synchronised.
The code will be made freely available and ported to SDM and a branch of CHDK.

It is not known how to communicate via USB.
EWAVR did play around with turning one of the USB data lines high and low but there were various restrictions, I cannot remember what.

Thanks for sharing, that is great news!
I am keen to take it underwater so I'll be waiting to see if the electronics can be miniaturised enough to fit in the dead spaces in the housings, and can use optical signaling between housings so I don't need to get the drill out....

Maybe not.

I know he is very busy with his work so I have just contacted him for an update.
He is saying that work will not resume until December or February.

I do have the programmed microcontroller, if I have time I may be able to play with it before then.

People are always busy, just like you probably are   ;)
