Is there a way to display an opaque background image on the LCD in live view?  I am trying to recreate some old photos and it would be very helpful to be able to load a jpg from the SD card and display it so I can try and align the photo I am taking.

Not without modifying the CHDK sources...
You can try the Edge Overlay feature, maybe this helps...
