kachar-- is there some reason I should get an A640 instead of the SD1100 that I have? They seem to have basically the same features, and I already have the chdk working on my SD1100. The motion detector script works great for birds on a windowsill for instance, I just haven't quite gotten it working for lightning yet. Next storm I'll remember to try.

The old A series have much better manual control. In particular, most of them have an adjustable aperture, manual focus and a mount for lens accessories.

That's not to say you need a new camera, but if you find one cheap it might be worth picking up.

edit:
The new A series (1000, 2000 series) and the 400 series are pretty much the same as SD/ixus.

Oh, I see, it is different than the one I was thinking of. I'll keep that in mind, but its not really in my budget right now, even used. I'm probably going to hold off getting another camera until next time I have some interesting travel planned, and who knows when that will be. That one is also somewhat bigger than mine -- I picked out the SD1100 partly because "the best camera is the one you have with you" and the SD1100 fits in my pocket/purse easily so I always have it with me.

If I had money to burn I'd totally get a second camera with more features for times when I know specifically that I want to take photos. But if I'm only going to have one camera at a time, I like the pocket-sized point and shoots. And its sort of a challenge to do these interesting things with that kind of camera. People are always impressed that it can do motion detection ;-)

I tried to practice with youtube videos as suggested, but I think my laptop screen emits too much light-- photos were triggered, but they didn't really show much except a general glow of the screen.

Where exactly is "ev compensation"? Do you mean I should turn down the regular exposure setting (non-chdk) or is there something else?

I have got the detector to buzz for static.
I just can,t get the volts that are suggested at the two test points ??

Due to house renovations, I do not get enough time to read every post. I suggested that electronic projects have a dedicated forum section but it seems no-one else is interested.

I have not built the circuit. Check your components for mistakes. There may be a wide range in operating voltage. Try measuring the voltage at the junction of TR2, R3 and C4. You may need to put a similar sized capacitor in series with your voltmeter probe.

One way to find out if the unit works is to go near a running car or motor bike engine.

I am putting together another from the extra parts & taking extra notice of placements.
I am using a pre-drilled & coppered board, they don't give you a second chance with the solder !
See how I go second time around :-)

It would be good to have a dedicated forum section on electronic projects ??
Maybe it fits in with " Hotwire! Hardware Mods, Accessories and Insights ".

The other good news is I have got the Canon Camera Hackers Manual.
Um, I have a lot to learn !  It comes with a CD as well.

If you need a couple of USB mini B plugs, unassembled, I could post them to you.
I bought 20 from USA. No moulding, just 3 pieces, plastic insert with 5 contacts, metal plug surround & metal clamp.
I got them to make some 90 deg ends.

I assume you have the meter on the AC range for TP1 and the DC range for TP2 ?

The board is powered by a 9volt battery.
Why would I need to have it in AC for TP1 ??
