How do I update a Canon camera with Canon firmware

This must have been brought up before, but I searched the forums and didn't find it. I have a Canon Powershot A610 camera with firmware 1.00a. I have downloaded dumps.7z from this forum and it contains 1.00e for the camera. In the 1.00e folder there is a file named primary.bin. How do I use it to update the firmware on my camera?

You don't. You can NOT use firmware dumps to update the firmware. You need official Canon updates
for this. Read about it here:

oh, and welcome to the forum !

Ah, ok. But I can't find the firmware for the A610 camera anywhere. I followed that link but there are only firmwares for other models in the A-series.

Well, that means there's no way to update your firmware.

Since currently only firmwares 100D, 100E and 100F have been reported for this cam,

and the cam is very old, the question arises if you are really sure about the firmware version:
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Q._How_can_I_get_the_original_firmware_version_number_of_my_camera.3F

if you are sure, than there's 2 things to do:

1) cross your fingers and try out CHDK for the existing versions on your cam - there's always a chance
    that the differences are so small that 1 of the existing CHDK's works - if you do this, you might have to
    remove & reinsert the batteries after each failed attempt to restore the cam to 'normal'

2) dump your firmware and port it (or wait for somebody else to port it)
   dumping: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Porting_the_CHDK
   porting: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Adding_support_of_a_new_firmware_version

hope that helps,

wim

PS forgot to add that for Canon P&S cams, higher firmware versions in 99% of the cases are
     slight mods by Canon to adapt to changed production processes - even if you could overwrite
     the original, that would very likely brick your cam. If they really are 'updates', than Canon will
     release them

edit: added some more info

Canon's unofficial A610 firmware update to 1.00F is available on russian forum (registration is required). If anyone interested, I can upload it to public file hosting.

Thanks, but after reading whim's post about the high chance of bricking the camera I don't want to risk it.

@ewavr

thanks for the correction, and please do (upload): since the A610 was the first to support CHDK, it deserves our support - i'm sure fe50 will find a safe spot for it  :D

@kallek

i was talking about a dumped firmware bricking your cam, but even that's theory only, since
a 1:1 copy of the ROM (which is what a dump is) will not be recognised by the cam as an update.
Canon updates - even unofficial ones - have rarely caused problems, as long as you use full batteries
or a power supply during update.

I think you've misunderstood whim.  CHDK shouldn't brick your camera if there is one available.  He was referring to if you were to actually to try to change the firmware on the camera (not the CHDK) to another dump version, there is a possibilty of bricking it.
