With this topic I would like to know what the Factory Menu in the Canon 400D is for...

After installing the testfir.fir I found that menu and I see there are four tests:

1. SW TEST  (Switches Test)
2. DISPLAY CK (Display Test)
3. DIAL CK (Dials test)
4. AF CK (Auto Focus Test)
5. DATA CHK (Check the results of the previous test)

I tried only the first 3 tests, and I managed to end successfully only 2 and 3.

1 - SW TEST
With this test you have to check if all your buttons works, so you have to press all the buttons on the camera.
It is divided in 4 pages.
Every line goes green whenever you press the relative button, when all lines are green the test is passed.

1. Accessory          <--- External Flash (just press Flash button with external flash attached)
2. MAIN DIAL1       <--- ???
3. MAIN DIAL2       <--- ???
4. AF SEL              <---Focus Point Selection / Zoom in
5. AEL                   <---Lock Exposure  / Zoom out
6. DRIVE               <---Shoot mode / Auto-shutter
7. AV                    <--- Av+/- Button
8. DIRECT PT        <--- Direct Print
9. DOF PREV         <--- DOF Preview (left below to the lens)
10 ST UP              <--- FLASH button (first push)
11 POPUP             <--- FLASH button (flash cover raising)
12 CHARGE           <--- FLASH button (some test flashes)
13 FLASH              <--- FLASH button (Main Flash)
14 LENS                <--- FLASH button (??? TTL maybe)
15 EXT ST             <--- ???
16 CF                    <--- Compact Flash (this lines goes green automatically after some seconds during the test)
17 DISP                <--- DISP button
18 JUMP                <--- JUMP button
19 PLAY                <--- PLAY/Preview button
20 ERASE              <--- delete button, waste bin
21 X KEY UP          <--- ISO/up
22 X KEY DOWN     <---WB /down
23 X KEY R            <--- AF / right
24 X KEY L             <--- Metering Mode / left
25 LG-SW1            <--- shutter half pressed
26 LG-SW2            <--- shutter full pressed
27 LG-MAIN D        <--- dial selector (near shutter)
28 LG-AF SEL         <---- same as 4
29 LG-AEL              <---- same as 5
30 LG-AV               <--- same as 7
31 BAT COVER       <--- battery cover (open and close the battery compartment, without removing battery)
32 REMOTE            <--- remote shutter
33 FDS                  <--- IR Face Sensor above the LCD (just pass a finger on it and remove)

As you see
I managed to find all the buttons except 3:

2 Main DIAL1
3 Main DIAL2
...
15 EXT ST

If not all buttons are pressed the test will fail.

Is there anyone who know how to pass those 4 lines? Where are the buttons for them?

I'm guessing, and this is just a shot in the dark, that Main Dial 1 is the DIAL by the shutter button? And Main Dial 2 would be on the back like the xxD would have?

Or maybe even the dial to change modes? ie. Av/ Tv/ M ??
And don't forget the DOF button under the lens!

edit ....
i see you've tried those .... my bad ... sorry

Well, I thought it could be the battery grip... or perphaps the remote shutter (the one with cable)... but I don't have both of them, I need to know from somebody who has them if he can check... :(

Hi there,
I presume that (15) is "External Speedlite Transmitter", better known as the ST-E2.
I already have a hacked 400d, so how do I enter the test menu to test my ST-E2?

Menu, Print, Menu, Menu.

Well, I made the EXT ST flag go grey when I pressed the flash button.
The downside is that it tried to open the popup flash and test that while the ST-E2 was fitted.
Most odd.

Yeah, I tried the same thing with a Sigma Flash attached to the hot spot.
I noticed that the popup raised even with the external flash but the "Accessory" line became green.

So I think "Accessory" means the external flash...  anyway nothing new :(

In fact I thing that EXT ST is still unknown... :(

If a line goes gray it doesn't mean it is successful, instead the error number reports also gray lines...

P.S.
I tested successfully also LCD check and DIals check tests, I will post my findings in the next days...

Hi Thaibv,
I'm guessing if there's a chance to alter the test results by writing the firmware...
I suppose that somewhere in the camera firmware the test results are stored... so they could be modified with a intentional firmware?

Probably the best way could be to find the code for the factory tests in the firmware and try to guess the point in which the code saves the results.
Then we have to know what values are for "passed" and "failed" results.

So I could restore the original state of the factory tests :) (Maybe for warranty reasons)

What do you think, is it feasible?
