The GoPro Hero is a small, basic camera intended for sports applications (like surfboarding, skiing, etc.).  It has no graphics LCD.

A firmware update for this camera has been released: http://pointofviewcameras.com/GoPro-Firmware-Upgrade
This update contains a table with what looks like addresses and function names.  I suspect they used a standard image sensor library, since some of the functions (such as histograms) are not implemented on this camera.

Could be an interesting project to hack this camera to add scripting or other features.

I wonder what CPU type it is. It's not ARM (or if it is, it's thumb mode).

it is Zoran COACH based camera.
architecture: MIPS32

If I remember correctly I published some tools to dissect such firmware format http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,1688.msg15358.html
these tools can not dissect whole file yet but you can get an idea...

I collected about 50 firmware files of Zoran COACH based cameras so far.
I'm on vacation right now.
When I'm home I will publish recent investigations results on this firmware format.
