Detecting the scene mode

Is there an easy (and standard) way to detect the scene mode the camera is set to?
There are not nearly enough buttons on the SD980, and I was thinking to use a scene mode (lots of useless ones) to enable CHDK. Is this doable?

If by "enable" you mean access the alt menu, that would be very inconvenient. It would also be a significant change from the way other ports work, since they all expect "alt" to be a button.

If you mean something else, you need to clarify.

Yes, that's what I mean. Anyway, did you look at that camera? Can you suggest which button should be used for ALT?

The least used button would be Disp, in record mode. But it is quite useful in play mode..

You can make it so that a short press accesses alt mode and a long press does the original function (or possibly the reverse). Disp or Play would both be candidates for this.

Or if you figure out how the touchscreen interface works, you could make it so tapping a particular part of the screen entered alt mode

Well, I guess I will use Disp for now, and see later about long/short presses. BTW, I can detect the touch as a button press, but not the location. I'll look more into the location once I am able to use the keyboard. So far, I am at the stage where I display the keyboard presses on screen to get their mask.
