Oh, I read it.  Let me read it to you :)

Error
Cannot load CHDK/badpixel.bin
Please run
CHDK/SCRIPTS/TEST/badpixel.lua

If those are clear, full instructions on what to do, I'll eat my 4g SD card :-)  I appreciate the link and will read it - I've been googling this for the past hour.  But that error message is gibberish to anyone who doesn't already know the problem and the solution :-)

It tells you which script to run to resolve that problem. If you installed the full CHDK package, the script is already on your card.

If you had search the forum for that message, you should find some useful results.

and yes, this should work more smoothly and be better documented ;)

I'm not complaining, and I very much appreciate all the work guys have done, and the fact that you're taking the time to help :-)  I sensed that you might think I wasn't doing my homework, before asking you guys questions, and I have :-)  It's just really not easy figuring this stuff out if you haven't done it before (I have coded before, but not this, and haven't jailbroken cameras, so to speak).  For example, I ran the script. I have no idea what comes next - it just said "run the script".  I did.  Now do I snap a picture and it works?  Tried that. :-)  I'm sorry, it's just very confusing if you don't know how all of this works.  (And I actually have already read the page you sent me to  :-)  Anyway, I'll just keep reading.

What happened when you ran the script ?

It should display some messages and take a couple of pictures.

Note that you have to click the shutter button after you selected the script and left the script menu.

Got it.  I was running the wrong script file, ran the other one, and it worked.  Thanks guys.

Thanks guys for all the help, I didn't mean to make this thread go sideways when I jumped into it with the same problem that sd700indc was experiencing.  I actually still have the problem.  I understand that there's no need for two partitions on my 2GB SD card, I was just using that one for testing rather than partitioning/formatting my 16GB card. The autoload is just a convenience, but I would like to have it (or at least understand why it won't work).  Perhaps the A710 doesn't support dual partitions, I don't know.
Even with the minor inconvenience of loading CHDK manually, I am just blown away by the capabilities of what you folks have created here!  I was able to locate and install a program to shoot an image every <x> seconds, which is the basic thing I was seeking.  It worked perfectly for me, capturing an image every 20 seconds for 12 hours.  Exactly what I wanted -- now I just need to find a program to turn my 2,160 stills into a movie.  I'm so impressed with this package that I plan to buy another PowerShot!
I'm an old-school C programmer, and I hope to be able to help with the development -- eventually.  But for now I am a total novice user, still working to learn the myriad capabilities of the A710 and CHDK.

a710 should support multipartition. At least, CAM_MULTIPART is set in camera.h, so someone thought it did ;)

People have had problems in the past where the partition type was set to a value the camera didn't recognize. Both partitions must also be primary DOS partitions AFAIK.

@sazmazm

I've now tried the above but unfortunately changing the second partition to primary didn't work.
I then came across the sdminste.exe which is an excellent tool for formatting and creating/swapping partitions under windows which I used to completely reformat my card.
Even after this my camera still did not switch partitions after booting.

I then tried reformatting the card in the camera to see what type of FS was allocated, I then re-formatted using sdminste.exe and finally changed the larger partition to W95 FAT32 (LBA) using Ubuntu & FDISK (this what was reported after formatting in the camera directly).

After doing all this I now have a running CDHK system.  :D

I think you're saying that both partitions should be primary partitions, but that the label (what FDISK calls the "type") on the larger should match what I see when I look at the results of letting the camera format the card.  I'll try that, as I was using a type of FAT32.  Results when I have them, and thanks again for all the help.
