Sorry it was my fault. The SX110 don't work on the SX120.

Use one of the discboot.bin files that I linked to. You'll then see a quality override option at the bottom of the CHDK photo menu: disable (use the camera's normal/fine setting), normal, fine and superfine.

Apart from the (subjective) reduction in JPEG artifacts, you can tell it's working as the average file will be 4Mb+ and a little 'S' will appear in the bottom left photo information in playback along with the resolution etc. Press display a couple of times to toggle through the options there.

Still no luck in generating a ps.fi2!

ewavr's pre-compiled package (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2995.msg28164.html#msg28164) generated one that the camera accepts (no error message) and blanks the screen for. Nothing else happens and I had to remove the batteries to hard-reset it. (fed with a working discboot.bin and the SX120 PID in 'G10' mode).

I tried the CHDK windows shell too, having put the G10 1.00f 16byte keys into fi2.inc. Same result with that: no error, black screen, but at least responsive to power cycling with the power button.

It'd be nice to be able to boot off the FAT32 partition, if only to swap back to the FAT16 autoboot partition after using the SD card in a PC.

Start out as though you were loading CHDK for an SX110.  Then change the DISKBOOT.BIN file ...
...
It worked great for me.
...

I'm probably doing something really wrong.
I have a 8Gb SD Card, using linux I created a 20Mb partition at the beginning of the file system. Formated it as FAT, made it bootable and copied all (DISKBOOT.bin, changelog.txt, vers.req *renamed to ver.req, readmet.txt and PS.FI2) files to that partition.

Now, if I boot the camera with the card locked it won't boot. Black screen and no LEDs, sounds signals.
If I boot the camera with the card unlocked, select Menu, click down to "Firm. Update..." it says: "Update File Error!!!"

Yes, I used SX110IS (sx110is-100b-0.9.9-912) as base and them replaced DISKBOOT.bin.

Here is what I see for Firmware info:

Canon Powershot SX120 IS
P-ID:31E0 NT D
Firmware Ver GM1.00B
E18

Is P-ID different from yours? Will it cause my problem?
Regards,
Thank you,
Douglas

Only discboot.bin goes onto the small FAT12/FAT16 partition. The rest should be put on the large FAT32 partition.

If only discboot.bin is put into the FAT16 partition I have no Firm. Update.. option on menu either with the card locked or not. Just tested it.

But thank you anyway.
Any other hints?

@douglaslps

You have a couple things different than what I have and I believe the first is your problem, but include the second just for grins.  I would suggest going for something that works, then expand to include your differences.

1.  When you download the full code for an SX110, you should also get a CHDK directory.  This CHDK directory needs to be added in addition to what you have.  It contains the 10 sub directories that I believe are required.  This directory goes in the root with DISKBOOT.bin.  After loading everything for the SX110, I overwrite the DISKBOOT.bin file with the one for the SX120.

2.  I am not partitioning my card, and mine is 2GB.  I would suggest using a different card with no partitions as a starting point.

Hope this helps

@stargeezer

1. I see. I also have the CHDK directory. I understand that this directory is to hold scripts and other chdk applications. But according to documentation this directory should go to the bigger FAT32 partition. That is why I didn't mentioned it. They say CHDK will boot in the small FAT16 partition and them switch to the bigger FAT32 partition where it will find the CHDK directory. I might be wrong.

2. I agree with you. My SDHC 8GB card may be the problem. Unfortunately I do not have a 2GB replacement available for testing. May be I should buy one.

Thank you stargeezer.
Does anyone else have more suggestions?
Regards,
Douglas
