Hi,
Complete newbie here.  Trying to format my 8GB SD card to run on my SX120IS.  Have read #450 but it doesn't seem to work - when I try the firm update the camera automatically powers down and fails to load CHDK regardless of whether I immediately push power button or not.
My current thinking is that from what I have read this camera doesn't support manual loading of CHDK, which means that thorwak's method for partitioning the SD card won't work as it requires manually loading CHDK in step 3.  If this is the problem, is there another easy method for partitioning the card, perhaps from my laptop? I tried running disk management but this doesn't seem to work either.

Any help massively appreciated.

The manual loading method does work, but it might take 3 or 4 attempts. You need to press the power button right around the time the screen turns black after OK'ing the firmware upgrade. I'm using the version from post 467 all the time.

Apart from that, run SDMinst on your PC to set up the SD card. It'll create the two partitions, mark one bootable and allow you to swap between the two. When you finish up, you'll have discboot.bin on the smaller fist partition, which itself marked bootable. The second larger partition will have the chdk directory/files.

Thanks cbob.
Unfortunately SDMinst isn't recognising any partitions on my SD card (whether it is pre-partitioned according to the instructions from thorwak or just standardly formatted) so even though I've leapt the first hurdle I still can't partition my card and therefore still can't run CHDK on these cards.
I noticed also that the SX120IS isn't in the list of Cameras that support 8GB cards on the wiki, is this an out of date list?
Thanks for your help.

Hi.

I used the chdk version from here http://forum.chdk-treff.de/autobuild.php

I am able to use optical zoom in video recording, so I know, I did a proper install.

Though, RAW option is present in the menu (tries with crw, .crw2 formats) and it saves images as well but on opening on a PC with photoshop/picasa, I get an invalid image error. Moreover, all RAW files are of the same size, which is bit odd.

Please, help me out here.

Hello and wellcome,

you can't open a CHDK-RAW file with PS or Picasa. A CHDK-RAW is not the same as a DSLR-RAW file. Maybe RawTherapee will be able to open the CHDK-RAW file.

Activate the DNG support in RAW menu. DNG files can be read many programms.

RAW files have ever the same size. That's right.

Most likely the CHDK version  does not fit to your camera's firmware version...

What's your camera's REAL firmware version ?

Tried the beta, the camera does not start or remain off.

Tried both
sx120is-100b-1.1.0-full_BETA_rev_526.zip
and
sx120is-100b-0.9.9-912-full.zip

FAT16 card, both bootable and menu methods tried.
The version info matches the info here, http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/SX120IS , european version.
Didn't check "Mecha Firm Ver".

What am i doing wrong?

Hi All,

I am new to chdk which I installed on my SX 120IS. I too never got to work it through firmware update. The camera just switched off or nothing happening after confirming update.  Auto-boot by locking the card works though.

Used following files,

http://forum.chdk-treff.de/autobuild.php
sx120is-100b-0.9.9-912-full.zip
sx120is-100b-1.1.0-DE-full.zip

Anyone point me to correct step to get it working ?

Also, any comments on battery life while using chdk. I see mine exhausting fatser ( Using Energizer 2450 mAH NiMh )

Thank You.
