hi all. i'm considering to get a couple of these cameras for a book scanning project. has anyone tested the remote capture function?

Hi.
I downloaded  chdk for sx120 form
http://forum.chdk-treff.de/download.php
 after pressing set button on firm update, lcd  goes off and nothing happens..
It's revision 655 1.1.0

I'm having the same problem: both boot loading and manually loading freeze the camera.

There appears to be only one firmware version: 100b

Hi all,

Thanks guys for such an awesome release for the SX120is!!
I installed it yesterday, and was very happy to see it run :)

(It did go off when i chose 'firmware upgrade', but then i kept the PLAY button pressed all the way. ie, You press play to turn it on into playback mode... but instead of pressing it once, i pressed and held it down, to turn it on... i never let go, and went into menu, firmware upgrade, and upgraded firmware to boot into CHDK)

However, i went into MENU, and found that the shutter override gave ridiculously high values. It went well beyond the 64 seconds mentioned in the 'features of chdk', into even numbers like '80,000' and so on...
The aperture too, it went till Apterture 16!

i was wondering it these levels are safe, or if should refrain from using them because this one is a beta release. if this behaviour wasnt supported, could it damage the camera?

PS: if the newbies are confused (like i was, when i tried to install this thing.) , i could post a video of how to install this thing. i know it isnt much, but would be glad to help. :)

you need to do this.
Note:im assuming your camera is off

1)press and hold your PLAY button down.
        The camera will start up into playback mode. DO NOT LET GO OFF THE PLAY BUTTON. KEEP IT PRESSED.
2)go to menu, firmware upgrade, and select OK, all this while the play button is pressed down.

3)when you select OK, the camera will briefly go off (1 sec or so) and boot into CHDK.

checked the SX120 with PtpCam, PtpCamGui, and CHDKPtp (http://subversion.assembla.com/svn/chdkptp/)

one thing is to be noted, which i think someone must have already mentioned in the forums, is that the camera tends to hang or shutdown very frequently if the camera is set to continous autofocus. as soon as i turned off the continous focus all the function become very smooth and stable.

i would think continous focussing must take quite a bit of computing power which would leave the connection and running the scripts prone to errors

anyways i think i should post the above to the PTP thread also as the same issue must arise in all models

I downloaded the firmware for my SX120IS per what Acid recommended. I unzipped the file directly to the SD card per instructions. When I go to Firmware update it gives me an error...Update File Error...HELP!! PLEASE!! My firmware version is 100b.

This message normally indicates that the CHDK version does not fit to your camera model.
Is it really a SX120, or do you own an IXUS120 ?
Otherwise the file PS.FI2 may be damaged, in this case i suggest to format the SD card and install a new downloaded CHDK package...

The camera is the SX 120 IS... I have reformatted the card several times and it still comes up with the error message.
