Sorry if this has been asked a thousand times already but I have done a search on the forum for any info. and have been unable to find out if CHDK can enable remote capture of those cameras without it. For example, I have a A710is and would love ability to view image on laptop or download as soon as taken, so that I can check if my afocal telescope images of moon are in focus or not.

Thanks for any help with this and sorry if has been asked before,

At least on a570 it's possible (with some additional hacking, this is not built in CHDK) to enable USB PTP while in REC mode. Also, ewavr has experimented with USB stuff on the a710. See e.g.

Thanks for the links Fudgey, will have a look at them. RaduP, the EyeFi card things look interesting but I read you need to be almost over your router and the download times are very slow, so not ideal for my purposes. Thanks for putting me onto it anyway :-)

I've just "finished" some (experimental) work on a CHDK PTP interface (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4338.msg41232.html). It currently only works for the IXUS 870 IS, but if the PTP code in the firmware of the A710IS is similar enough it shouldn't be hard to make it work for that camera as well. Given that the switching to record mode with PTP support is already possible, this should allow you to do what you want.

Note that this doesn't provide the standard PTP remote capture, but it does allow you to remotely switch modes and send LUA commands (such as "shoot()").

Let me know if you need me to have a look at it. (I can't test anything for your camera, though.)
