I just did a test. I took a photo using a Ridata 8GB SDHC card. That reads fine, and I can see the photo in Windows XP. I formatted the cards and installed CHDK within minutes of each other, and I am using the same card reader and the computer on which I formatted and installed. Maybe 16GB is too big? Maybe I need a special driver for a 16GB PNY Optima card? Help! These are my photos from four weeks in Italy, and I don't want to lose them!

I just did a test.

You mean that you formatted the card with two partitions ?

I can't find "swap partitions" on my camera. I looked on http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_firmware_usage/MoreBest, and it says:

"Swap partitions
Only for vxWorks cameras because DryOS cams do not have the firmware-update boot method"

Unfortunately, the A650IS uses DryOS.

I also looked on http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/A650IS but can't find anything relative to the problem. But I wonder why I can see files on the 8GB Ridata card but not on the 16GB PNY card. Strange!

Yes, the partition containing CHDK (on both cards) is 16MB, FAT, and the partition containing the photos is the rest of the capacity, FAT32. I can see the photos in the camera, so I know they're there.

Is there a website for support for your card reader ?

It's a generic card reader. But I don't think the problem is with it because I can see the photos on the 8GB Ridata card.
Anyway, I managed to retrieve some of the photos... see next post for how.

OK, I found a workaround that enabled me to salvage most of the photos, if not all. Here's how:
1. In PartitionMagic, I made a bit of room on my hard drive and tried to copy the second partition on the SDHC card to the empty space to see if I could see the photo files on the hard drive. I received an error message that there were "too many errors."
2. Just to be on the safe side so I wouldn't accidentally wipe out all the photos, in Computer Management, I did a backup. I noiced that there were a number of multi-MB files with the extension ".CHK."
3. In Computer Management, I did an error check.
4. On the SDHC card, I ended up with a file called "FOUND:000" with 292 objects, all with the extension ".CHK." These were listed in Windows as Recovered File Fragments.
5. I copied a couple of the files to my hard drive and changed the extension to ".jpg." Then I opened one in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and there was the entire photo! So now I have 292 files, most of which are of large size, some of which are quite small but may be relics of photos I deleted, just to keep the number sequence in the camera going. I will have to go through the files, looking at the photos on my camera, to figure out the real numbers and give them the proper extensions according to whether they are JPG, RAW, or video. But at least I seem to have most of the ones that are on the card, and maybe all.
6. Just to see, I cloned the second SDHC partition to my hard drive (it worked this time), but when I looked at it, there were still no original photo files there, only the CHK files.
7. I restored the backup file to a folder on my hard drive, but there again, there were no photo files, only the CHK files.

Well! Obviously I will not be using the PNY card in my camera again; I will use the 8GB Ridata cards, which I know work. But at least I managed to retrieve most of my files!  :P

Well done !

I do recall PNY cards giving people problems in the past.
I always use SanDisk, especially for movies or continuous-mode shooting.

Ah, I wish I'd known that, I'll avoid them in the future. I had used an 8GB PNY card in the past and it worked fine, but I wasn't using CHDK at the time, so I don't know if it would pose the same problems. I find the Ridata to be quite good, too. I have class 6 and they're quite fast and don't cost quite as much as the SanDisks, possibly because they're less known and less advertised. I use them because I once bought a used Canon PowerShot Pro1 with a Ridata CF card and I was very pleased with it.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I just wanted to add one more thing, which is that I know the problem can't be with the reader because when I hook up the camera to the computer with a cable I can't see the photos then either. The PNY will now become a backup card for files, I needed one anyway.
Nighty-night, sweet dreams! :)
