Ahhhhhh... success at last! (I'm the kind who can't bear to give up until I've solved a problem.)
I still can't see the photos in Windows Explorer or any photo viewing program, but now (possibly due to the error correcting I did earlier) both the Canon utility called CameraWindow and the Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard work. Phew! Got those photos back!

You can also use CHDK manually loaded from the "Firmware update" item in the Canon Menu.
Just format the SD card in the camera (this makes one FAT32 partition on cards > 2GB), copy the CHDK files to the root of the card, power on the camera in playback mode & call the firmware update...

Ah, that's an interesting idea. I'll try that and let you know if it works. Though on second thought, I believe that CHDK works only on FAT, not FAT32.

No, CHDK works on FAT12, FAT16 & FAT32 formatted partitions; only the automatic loading mechanism (with a locked, CHDK-bootable SD card) needs a FAT12 or FAT16 file system.
