I have 1.02b SX20 and I would really like to try the beta release.
I am new to CHDK, so I just went thru the manual and this thread and I have a question.
The "Firm Update" function is apparenty missing in SX20, so that means that I have no other way to start CHDK other than making a bootable partition on a SD card?
I would very much like to evade partitioning of the card and that whole deal with swapping partitions (I have a 16GB SDHC card), at least while I'm testing and learning how to work with CHDK.

Correct, the "Firm Update" function isn't available yet. I recommend just getting a 4G SDHC card (about $15 from Walmart) and set it up to use as your test card. That way you can switch out cards if you have an important event you want to photograph, but you still aren't fully comfortable with CHDK yet. Here's a simple checklist to get you started:

1 - Get a 4G SDHC card for testing
2 - Download the latest beta release by @ACID2000 at: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4348.msg50345.html#msg50345
3 - If you are using Windows, then I recommend downloading a copy of a document I created for installing CHDK for cards up to 4G and beyond: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4348.msg50161.html#msg50161
4 - Just for background info, here is another posting that might be helpful as well: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4348.msg50291.html#msg50291

There is a little "learning curve" when you first get started, but it's well worth it once you start processing your first DNG photos. I use Photoshop CS3 and ACDSee v3. Be sure to work your way up to experimenting with scripts because you'll be amazed at what can be accomplished with CHDK and scripts: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4348.msg50507.html#msg50507

Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for the detailed checklist, SkyWalker :D
I will probably use the old 1 GB SD card I have in my 5 years old PDA I'm not actively using anymore for testing.

One more question about one thing I'm a little fuzzy about.
If I understood correctly, there is no way to edit the RAW image made by CHDK in Photoshop directly?
If that is true, is there an option to capture the image in DNG format at the time of the shooting, without the need for later conversion?

There was some discussion in earlier postings about preparing to use the RAW CRW formats, but I'm not sure if there was a "clean" way to preprocess the RAW CRW files. However to answer your question about DNG, yes having CHDK save the RAW as DNG is simple and is the format I prefer for a number of reasons.

In order to keep this posting short, I created a short document for you that explains DNG vs RAW, how to setup DNG and a few other simple tips for you because you are just starting out. Here is a link to the file:

Don't be shy about asking for help - there are a lot of others reading these postings who might have wanted to ask similar questions or offer helpful tips.

Quick question.. Is it even remotely possible with the SX20 to use the video function, and take time lapse at 1fps and play back at 15fps (like my SD770IS does), or is that just simply not doable? That is one thing I would absolutely LOVE to be able to do on this camera, but have seen no mention of elsewhere.

Unfortunately, I haven't worked with the video aspects of the SX20IS yet. You got me wondering though, so I did a quick search on the subject of video and found a posting that might help. http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,2146.msg19887.html#msg19887

The posting is from 2008, so perhaps asking for an update in one of the CHDK general discussion forums (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php) might find someone who has more up-to-date info. Good Luck!

@SkyWalker9

Can you please look into FW 1.02D? I'm really keen using it on my camera. Looks like your script is going to unleash the power of the camera.

Thanks in advance.

@ACID2000 would probably be the best person to direct this question. I've only tested & used @ACID2000's beta releases. @ACID2000 mentioned he/she would attempt to port a version for the 1.02d FW if a dump could be provided (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4348.msg50378.html#msg50378). It will be a bit more difficult not having a camera with the 1.02d FW to test with, so I admire @ACID2000 for offering to help - the level of difficulty will be higher!
