Wolf in sheep's clothing - IXUS 50 firmware in IXUS 40 case?

Really odd one this; I've got a IXUS 40 (4MP) freshly arrived from eBay. Formatted with ver.req, bought up the version screen with SET+DISP, and the screen reads:

Canon DIGITAL IXUS 50
P-ID: 310E PAL

Firmware Ver GM1.01B
E18
Mar 29 2005 21:16:07

A bit odd; the IXUS 50 is the 5MP counterpart to the IXUS 40 (4MP). I took a photo and opened it in Photoshop: 2592x1944 (5MP).

So, can anyone suggest what on earth this camera is? A IXUS 40 with the wrong firmware (with the camera presumably automatically upscaling to 2592x1944) or a IXUS 50 in an IXUS 40 case?

I haven't tried running the CHDK firmware because I'm wary of bricking the camera if it really has had the wrong firmware loaded.

Thanks!

Turns out I'm more impatient than that - put an IXUS 50 build of CHDK on the card and loaded it, took a RAW and it came out at 2592x1944. Looks like despite the casing, it really is an IXUS 50!

(As if that's not enough, the seller listed it as an IXUS 400 (an older model) - so I got it for a song!)

The typical SD / IXUS mix-up...

Your camera is a DIGITAL IXUS 50, build for the european market;
for the north american market the same hardware is the POWERSHOT SD400 DIGITAL ELPH,
the one for the japanese market is the IXY DIGITAL 55 - it's all the same hardware.

That'd be my first reaction too, but;

-The camera casing reads 'DIGITAL IXUS 40' and '4.0 MEGA PIXELS' and has the Canon part number 'PC1101' (which corresponds to the IXUS 40 / IXY 50 / SD300)

-The firmware displays as in the first post as a 'DIGITAL IXUS 50', and the 2592x1944 RAW images seem to agree with it

-And the ebay seller listed the item as a 'Canon PowerShot S400 / IXUS 400 Digital Camera'

So bizarre as it seems, it really does seem to be a case of an IXUS 50 in an IXUS 40 case sold as an IXUS 400!

Odd... Ixus 40 / 50 / 400 / Powershot S400 / SD400 ... --> you're sure it's really a camera, not an UFO ? :haha
