You start a script by pressing the shutter button in ALT mode.
i need to start the script from the usb switch. as i said, the goal is to not use any controls on the camera.

Quote
'wait_for_switch_press' should then wait until you press your USB switch.

Are you saying that it does not ?
yes, as i said, this does work

You must read the basic information about scripts if you wish to do this.
You should also read the scripting tutorial.

In Script menu, set the script to Autostart.
Turn-off the camera and then turn-on again.

The script will start and will be waiting for you to press the switch.

my apologies, i did not have autostart on.

now i have autostart on, i am able to take a picture using the usb remote while in alt mode, however, now the camera does not switch to playback mode!

so:

if i do not have the camera in autostart mode: i start the script with the shutter button, the usb remote takes the picture, the camera switches to playback mode, waits, and switches back.

if i do have the camera in autostart mode: i do not have to start the script with the shutter button, the usb remote will take the picture straight away, but then the camera does not switch to playback mode.

so close...

ok, nearly there.

i think i've got an issue with autostart mode.

i'm happy to hit the shutter button once at the start of a session as long as i don't have to touch the camera from then on.

i have this script currently:

@title upload test
@param a upload time
@default a 30
:loop
wait_for_switch_press
shoot
upload_images_for a
goto "loop"
end

which seems to be good.

but now i think i have a problem caused by my usb switch.

the idea is that i have a push-to-break switch across the +ve leg.

so when the button is not pushed (default) it acts like a pass through and the camera is connected to the computer. this is necessary for downloading the pictures.

this works sometimes when the camera is recognising a break in usb power as a trigger to release the shutter.

but in this case i think the camera recognises any voltage on the +ve leg as a trigger to take a shot. This means that if the button is up and the camera switches from playback to record, another shot is taken immediately.

so currently with this script and my button i have an infinite loop going on.

any way to put a break in the loop and get the camera to look for switching voltage rather than any voltage present?

Normally, SDM is in Synch mode.
The word 'Synch' is displayed at the top of the screen.
In the image-capture code, it waits for switch-release.
You do not want that so disable Synch mode by adding command 'sync_off' to your script.

See if the following works  :-

@title upload test
@param a upload time
@default a 30
sync_off
:loop
do
until not (is_key "remote")
shoot
upload_images_for a
goto "loop"
end

hi,

i have tested this out to make a stop frame animation

i came across a couple of problems:

if you pause for a while between taking shots (ie. drawing the next frame) the camera turns itself off. this means you have to touch the camera to turn it back on meaning that the shot gets ruined.

when the camera goes into the mode to allow photos to be uploaded, it shuts the lens etc. this means that on returning to record mode settings like zoom etc are lost. even if you go with the default zoom it's slightly different each time. any way to retain settings between shots?

In menu Advanced\Miscellaneous, set 'Disable LCD off' to 'Script'.

For now, we cannot do anything about retracting the lens.
You could read the zoom and focus positions and after returning to Record mode reset them to those values.
Look-up the uBasic commands, if you get stuck ask again.

to fix the zoom issue, i tried this. which works but it seems as if the camera does not wait for zooming to finish before firing the shutter. is there a better place to put the "set_zoom" command so that this is reset as soon as the camera returns from playback mode?

@title Animator
@param a upload time
@default a 10
sync_off
get_zoom r
:loop
do
until not (is_key "remote")
set_zoom r
shoot
upload_images_for a
goto "loop"
end
