remote shutter control and automatic download

i have a canon a470 which does not support remote control from a computer.

i would like to rig it up to work like you would with a tethered camera where you click one button and a photo is taken and then uploaded to the computer.

so far i have proven that usb cable remote control is possible on this camera by simply plugging and unplugging the usb connection to my computer.
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,294.msg27297.html#msg27297

i plan to make a cable up with a switch so the camera can stay connected to the computer and the power is just toggled to take the picture.

i have discovered that when usb remote mode is on then you cannot download pictures from the camera to the computer. when usb remote mode is switched off then the camera becomes available to the computer.

i believe i can set my computer (mac os x) to automatically download pictures from the camera when it is attached.

if i could get chdk to switch remote mode off after the shutter is released then the computer would see the camera and then download the photo.

how would i get chdk to do this?

You can do this with SDM.
See this page http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/upload2.htm
The uploading programme is WIA-Loader.

I have no idea if this can work with a Mac.

is this not a programme that runs on the computer?

it is my understanding that when in remote mode the computer cannot see the camera.

i think i need a script that runs on the camera and turns off remote mode after the shutter is released

That is what it does.
The actual programme on the PC that starts-up can be whatever you have assigned to the 'camera detected' event.

SDM happens to use WIA-Loader.

os, i see, that link you gave me doesn't make clear that SDM is a version of CHDK.

trying to install SDM now, but having problems. I had no problem installing CHDK on my SD card, but SDM wants me to run a .exe?

How do I manually instal SDM?

sdminst.exe is an installer and partitioner that even CHDK users use.
If your card is already bootable, rename the existing DISKBOOT.BIN and replace with the one for your camera from the website.

The SDM uBasic command 'upload_images_for' followed by time in seconds, automatically switches between record and play modes and enables/disables USB remote switch.

You do not have to worry about that.

i have already installed chdk fine without sdminst.exe

ok, i swapped the DISKBOOT.BIN i already had with the appropriate one downloaded from here:
http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/index.htm

sdm seems to work ok, i can trigger the shutter with my usb switch.

sorry, i don't understand this.

i can't find any menu items that seem to fit with this

Because you used a different method to make your card bootable.

It is not a menu item.
As I said, it is a script command.

@title upload test
@param a upload time
@default a 30
upload_images_for a
end

The above script switches to playback mode and enables USB upload for 30 seconds.
Some programme on your computer will start.
After 30 seconds, USB upload will be disabled and camera will switch back to record mode.

hi, thanks for that script.

i have put it into the scripts directory on the sd card

i have tested the script by firing it manually using the alt button and then the shutter button.

so all i need now is for the script to fire by itself after the shutter is released.

First of all, what does your Mac do when it sees that the camera is connected for thirty seconds ?
