Auto ISO & CHDK menu stability issues - SD990

I was experimenting with CHDK's Auto ISO on my SD990 and found this particular feature limiting because the lowest shutter speed it will select is 1/8 which is faster than the camera will do on its own. As a result, with CHDK, I am getting higher ISOs than necessary. For example, on a certain shot in dim lighting, the camera's own Auto ISO selects 1/2 second and ISO 400 and the shot comes out clear. With CHDK, it will select 1/8 second and ISO 1250.

IOW, CHDK is too conservative here. It would be helpful if there were 1/2 and 1/4 second options in the CHDK menu. Is there any way to add those options?  Would a script do it?

The second issue I am having is that sometimes the CHDK menu appears pixelated and faded out -- to varying degrees and sometimes to the point where it can't be read at all. If I turn off the camera and turn it back on, then switch to shoot mode before calling up the CHDK menu, the problem goes away. This has never happened to CHDK on my A710. Anyone have an idea what's going on here?

Thanks ...

Pat

FWIW, I never saw the menu issue you describe when I had the SD990.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

rey, I still am seeing it sometimes, but it's not a big deal. I just turn it off and back on and then put it in shoot mode before bringing up the menu and it goes away.

As for lowering the minimum shutter speed for CHDK''s auto ISO -- to below 1/8 --  is there anyway to do that? Is it doable by script? Is it easy to write a script? (I have no background in computer programming.) Or would it help if I add it to the feature requests?

I'm not sure if i've misunderstood your question, but I think it might help to - if not yet done - download the latest user guide (link: see my signature) and read page 12/13, where Custom Auto ISO is discussed :
AFAIK Extra Photo Operations -> Custom Auto ISO -> User factor / IS factor should allow you to tweak the minimum shutter speed to your liking

Hello whim. Thanks for your suggestion. I tried tweaking the User Factor and it had limited effect on the ISOs -- more at full wide than at full telephoto. So I played around with the Max Auto ISO setting and that seemed to do the trick. It was counter-intuitive though. For example, to have the camera limit ISO to 500, I had to set the max Auto ISO to 30.  To limit it to ISO 400, I had to set it at 25.

At any rate, this might help someone else. If you are trying to tweak the Custom Auto ISO, the max ISO setting may be the best setting to adjust as opposed to the User Factor or IS Factor.

Unfortunately I am still having an issue with the pixelated CHDK menu sometimes and putting the camera in shoot mode first doesn't always fix it. It only appeared after updating the version of CHDK I was using so I might try reverting to the previous version.

Since other SD990 user don't have this issue, i guess there's something wrong with your CHDK installation, maybe the config file is old/corrupt or there might be a problem with the filesystem of your SD card...

I suggest to
- backup your files (images)
- format the card (+ prepare for autoboot, if you want)
- download a fresh CHDK full package from the Autobuild server & expand it to the SD card

It's fixed. I put the latest version of CHDK on my card earlier this evening and I've been testing it and haven't come up with the pixelated menu once. I was getting it at least 70% of the time before.

Last time I upgraded I only changed the ps.fir and diskboot.bin files (as instructed) but this time I changed out everything except I kept my configuration file.  Either there was some incompatibility between the two versions I had or the latest version simply fixed something. Whatever, it now works.

Thanks for the assistance.
