Unable to use zoom during video for sx200is
« on: 24 / October / 2009, 19:30:59 »

I have the chdk small version (d) working nicely on my canon sx200is. The default option is ticked for enable zoom during video, but I haven't been able to get this to work during videoing.

Am I doing something wrong, or is it not yet possible?

Thanks

You should be able to zoom during the video without using CHDK, but you will be limited to 4-5x digital zoom, which looks horrible.
If you are using CHDK, make sure the option is selected on the CHDK menu and before you start recording the video zoom in all the way, 12x, now start the recording, as soon as you started recording zoom all the way out, now you can use the optical zoom freely during the recording, it will look great most of the time, but be aware that when using optical zoom during the recording the lens won't update the focus automatically, that's a known limitation.
When you are done recording use the Canon built-in menu function to TRIM the beginning of the video when you had the zoom set at 12x.

All,
you need to read the "readme" file (part of the Full zip) or the developers page for SX200.
Both tell you this.......

Note that sound recording is always on when Optical Zoom is enabled in Video Record mode

To enable Optical Zoom during Video, set Digital Zoom = Standard in the Canon menu, set Enable Optical Zoom in the CHDK menu. Start recording, click zoom out lever then use optical and digital zoom as normal.

Manual AF Scan - set "AF Key" in CHDK menu to "Set" or "Shutter", then use during Video to force a single AF Scan.
Also note that during video zoom, if you go from optical into digital range, you need to stop (release the zoom lever) as you go back from digital into the optical range.

Thanks OldGit. This worked for me. Is there a way to reduce the sound during zooming in or out. This is really disturbing.

You can try using the slower zoom (half zoom) speed, but the position of the mic . right next to the lens and motor, mean that you will always get the noise.
Most people just edit it out afterwards.
