HDR on PowerShot S2 IS / Bracketing in continuous mode

Hi,

i have a PowerShot S2 IS and use Firmware version s2is-100e-0.8.9-821-full .

The firmware itself works fine and i made the SD card bootable.

I want to create HDR photos and for that enabled:
-> Bracketing in continuous mode
-> Tv bracketing value 1 Ev
-> Bracketing type +-

In normal mode i pressed the button right behind the "release button" (right term?)
that shows several squares behind each other.
In the menu i see in red:
BRACKET: +/-
TV:1Ev

I press the <ALT>-Button, to enable bracketing, point to somthing and press the release button.
Then the menu show up that describes the buttons that steer bracketing.
I push (and hold down) the "Set"-Button until 5 photos are taken.

But they are all the same brightness, no difference in exposure time.

Can anybody tell me what went wrong?

I'd like to take (at least) five photos with different exposure time (brightness) to create HDR photos.
(Any other reasonable way would also be ok.)

Thanks for any hints,
Torsten.

Hello & welcome, Torsten !

-> Bracketing type +-
That's correct.

After you've set up this in the CHDK mode, leave <Alt> mode.

Now switch to the camera's continuous drive mode or the custom timer mode (with the button you've mentioned),
you'll see the red messages on the OSD.

When you've selected the continuous mode, just pres & hold the shutter button until the images are captured; with custom timer mode, just press the shutter once...

If this is not working, some thoughts what could be wrong / what you can try:
- Did you set the CHDK "Disable overrides" to ON ? (help)
- is the Canon AEB (bracketing) enabled ? -> disable it
- try a different camera mode, e.g. Tv or Manual mode

Hello,

thanks for your hints.

I've read the doc for "Disable Override", i'm confused and i'm not sure, should it be on or off?
Well, i tried both.

The Canon AEB you mentioned, is this a mode that the normal firmware supplies?  I did not find it in te CHDK, is it not in the PowerShot S2 IS?

I tried different modes, Tv and Manual (in all combinations with "Disable Override").

Still, all images are the same brightness.  I'm not sure, is there anything more i can test to track the problem further down?
Also, if there is another script i could try that would be also ok for me.

Thanks for any hints,
Torsten.

Set it to OFF; you can use "Disabled" if you want to use a shortcut button.

Yes, it's the Canon built-in bracketing feature... http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_s2-review/

hmm - now i'm a bit confused, we are talking about scriptless bracketing, you don't need a script...

Did you load / run a script ?

Thanks a lot for your hint !!!

Sorry for being unclear.  I do not use a script at the moment.  I meant that if what i want can be achieved with a script, then this would be ok.  So at the moment i don't use a script.

Also, i was not setting the self timer.  Thanks for your hint.

But (next problem) when i leave ALT-mode, go to the menu in "camera mode" (not playback / view mode), the camera switches off when i enter the tab that contains the self timer.  The other two tabs work fine.

Weird.

So i entered the values after booting up from another SD card.

Now i can take 5 bracketed exposure-changed photos.

Hooray !!!

Thanks a lot for your help,
Torsten.

You mean, you can't change the Canon "drive mode / self timer" settings while CHDK is loaded ? That's odd...
There's something wrong then...maybe a bug in CHDK, maybe the CHDK config file is corrupted.

You could try it with a freshly formatted SD card & a new CHDK installation (Just start CHD & try to enter the Canon drive menu).

Of course you can change the Canon settings when you start the camera without CHDK (i.e. with the SD card unlocked)...

Maybe other S2 users could test this...
