Hi Fellas,

ive got a powershot sx1 with multiple 8gb sandisk extreme sd cards..

I would love to enable chdk on my camera, however it seems extremely tedious to configure dual partiitons on the sd cards, especially as ill be using them on multiple pcs, and also my wife isnt as tech savvy to try and keep flipping partitions in windows etc.

Can someone tell me why chdk cant be made to work on the fat32 partitions instead of fat12/16?? or if theres any work being done in making this possible? The SD Cards will only get larger and larger, and fat16 is fast becoming obsolete. There has to be an easier way :)

The canon firmware is what loads CHDK, and it only loads DISKBOOT.BIN under certain conditions
1) the card is locked
2) the card is formatted FAT16
3) the card has the BOOTDISK string written at the correct location.
Since this happens before CHDK is loaded, there is nothing CHDK can do to change this. Be thankful that canon left the ability to boot form disk in at all, they didn't have to!

On all cameras except the SX1, you can also load CHDK manually, from any size card, using the "firm update" menu (note, this does not actually update the firmware, it just load it that one time). "firm update" loading is probably fixable on the SX1, but would be very difficult for a developer to do without the camera.

As an alternative solution, I'd suggest getting one or more 4GB cards, formatting them FAT16, and preparing them with CHDK.

Ok i would have been more then happy to manually load the chdk everytime from my 8gb card, as i'd like to keep it as a single partition, but just my luck my camera is the only one that doesnt support this?? How come?
Being one of the better p&s cameras in the canon range, it should have been alot easier to implement it :)
Is this still a no go for the SX1 IS, even with the fw 2.0 ??

It crashes for some unknown reason. As I said, this is probably fixable, but such things are very difficult to debug without the camera.

CHDK never supported the 1.x versions, it only supports 200h and 201a

Being a "better" camera is irrelevant to development work. What is relevant is whether someone with the required knowledge has the camera, time and motivation. In general, less people have the more expensive models.

so none of the chdk developers have their  hands on an sx1??

Would i be able to use a small SD card (say 512mb) to load chdk on their then once it boots up, insert my normal 8gb card in to store the photos on?

aka - hotswap the cards while the camera is on..

i dont really want to go out and buy more sd cards, it would be good to have chdk working properly on sx1 without all the hassle

This seems to work on some cameras on at least some cameras that do not share the battery and SD compartment.

4GB SDHC  < $10
SX1 >  $500

It's hard to see how swapping cards every time you start CHDK is more hassle than having one (or more) cards dedicated to CHDK, but it's your choice.
