Multicamera synch setup using CHDK

I am as excited as a sow in a bucket of pig swill. Been trying to work out how to setup multicameras for 3d photography. Now thinking that maybe CHDK is going to be my saviour. My ideal setup is this...

a) 8 powershot cameras in a row
b) each camera with fixed aperture, W/B, exposure, zoom, and maybe even focus (focus is an issue that I can get around if I can point all cameras at a set area, fix the focus and then re-aim)
c) all cameras shoot at same moment
d) all cameras synched to studio flashes (optional but ideal otherwise can use fixed lighting)

is it possible with CHDK. Would it be a custom script? What are the main problems? Possible with 570a's?

a) 8 powershot cameras in a row

No problem, this person is using 52 cameras :  http://www.mishra.tv/wordpress/?p=40

c) all cameras shoot at same moment

They are typically synchronised to 1/5000 sec

d) all cameras synched to studio flashes

The gentStereo products do this and you can also buy USB extenders for easy cabling to multiple cameras :

No, this is what the CHDK version known as SDM is designed for http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/index.htm

The animated image on the SDM main webpage was made with a camera setup like you are describing.
It is eight or nine cameras.

Yes.

I think so, and it is always interesting to hear how people are getting-on with creative applications, either here or on the Yahoo SDM Group :-

One more thing David. Clearly I have a very steep learning curve ahead of me but will start imminently! But the research I have done on SDM this evening seems to suggest that I might be able to use a smaller Ixus. Maybe the Ixus 60. Do you have any opinion on the best camera to use for this project?  Is there any technical benefit to using the larger powershots?

Thought the best place to start would be to buy three cameras and the kit you mentioned and see where it takes me.

Thanks again

James

I have been too busy maintaining SDM to have time to study cameras !
I suggest that you join the SDM Group, describe in more detail what you want to do and ask for advice on most suitable camera.

There are at least four group members who have done something similar.
In your post, refer to Peter Murphy's animated image on the main webpage.

Although SDM has many features, you can basically just press the switch .. without any scripts.

The gentStereo USB expander is very neat and allows up to twelve cameras to be connected and the USB cables are more flexible than regular ones.

You may or may not need right-angle connectors depending on how your cameras are arranged.

You may wish to use an external power supply.
