Third reason - my Adobe DNG Converter dont write SubIFD tags, maybe newer will, I dont know.
Adobe DNG converter v. 5.5 uses only only IFD0 and several SubIFD.
Here is source RAW - http://www.rawsamples.ch/raws/canon/s30/RAW_CANON_S30.CRW
Here is DNG, converted by Abode DNG converter 5.5 - http://www.zshare.net/download/6864473383fe8999/
And here is dng_validate output (attached to this post).

Well, this means that I was wrong.
And there are only possibilities that problems appears because we use DNG 1.2.0.0 features while writing ver 1.1.0.0. to header, or because those software does not compatible with DNG specification (or just does not support 1.2.0.0 spec).
Because specification allows 10bits and 12bits per sample RAWs.
If someone could perform some tests on Mac - I can provide DNG for testing.

Hey, I'm using a Mac with Photoshop CS3. I have an SX120 which produces DNG files that CS3 won't open because of an error about the module-sensor not parsing or something (I am seriously untechnical). I noticed the DNG files behave in the same way as the OP, with a dark thumbnail working, but everything else pitch black.

I have Adobe DNG Converter 5.6 but that returns an error 'parsing the file' when I try to do a dng -> dng conversion.

Anyone have any idea how I can get a workable image for Camera Raw from my SX120?

Just an update, got it working now. I simply swapped to a 4GB Ultra II SD card (was using the packaged 128mb card) and now it's all working fine.
