IXUS980 underwater, need to re-assign ALT button

I'm using the CHDK on my ixus980 build 1.00E    and it's a great tool as I really love the RAW shots i can get with this.  However, i shoot in manual mode underwater, and i often use the print button to change shutter speed as this controls the mode dial which i can't access on the camera housing.
Have seen some posts, where others have had success at changing the ALT key to work with the camera's 'display' button.
is this possible to do in this case?
I am not a programmer and wouldn't know how to go about it. I see this is only a Beta version too,  is it worth waiting for the next version before looking at making this change.
thanx

The ixus980/sd990 doesn't currently allow you to reassign the alt button. However, holding down the print button should access whatever function you have assigned to it. Alternately, you could make a script to set the shutter speed, or allow you to adjust the settings with other controls.

The beta status reflects the known issues on http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/SD990 There isn't any particular time frame for them to be resolved. Adjustable alt button isn't really a standard feature, so that isn't related to the beta status.

Reyalp Thanks for the reply
I don't have anything assigned to print button as this is used like a shift key which allows me to operate the dial functions which normally can't do underwater. Basically i'm using it all the time to change settings.  scripting anything is not an option for me as i dont know what i'm doing.
Will try camera out next time using auto exposure mode (less playing with settings).
as long i can do plenty tweaking on the RAW images, i should still get some okay pics underwater.

Thanks

Just so I'm clear: In the normal canon firmware, if you hold down the print button, and press left/right (I guess ?), it has the same effect as turning the dial ?

If so, you may still get the same effect with CHDK if you hold the print button for half a second or so before you press left or right. Or maybe not, looking at the code it might just act like you clicked the button rather than holding it down.

If you use P mode instead of M, you should be able to adjust exposure manually with left and right. You need the dial to choose between P and M mode in the first place, but I'm pretty sure the last setting used is remembered when you restart.

I can also post a simple script that lets you use the arrow buttons to emulate the dial.

Correct.  holding down the print button while pressing left/right will emulate turning the dial. I have tried to do this after installing CHDK but it no longer works.

this script you're talking about..  how will the camera know whether i intend to use the dial functions or the left/right push button functions?? Or do I have to stay in the same mode while camera is in the housing

How does it work? Could you please explain?
