P.S. would you happen to know if it is possible to automate the following somehow, e.g. with a script: focus stacking + exposure stacking

I am glad you asked that.
I wondered if anyone would use that feature.
The SDM time_lapse,bas will do it http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/sdm/ubasic.htm

SDM 1.82 will be released in the next hour or so , so check the website again.

This main page  http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/  will be slightly different .

I have no idea if the camera will turn-off after a few hours.

Sweet, I'm glad I asked! How convenient and good timing. I will try it out, thanks!

Ok, I've spent quite some time with the script but I'm having problems. When I use "Shots with Focus bracketing (continuous mode) and Tv override" it works fine with focus exposures and Tv exposures set to 3, although taking extra pictures with different exposures every now and then.

The problems emerge when I try to use larger quantities of pictures. When I have Tv exposures 11 and focus exposures 10, the camera then takes 9 different focus exposures (difference of 1 no big deal) but only 6 different Tv exposures, that is does focus stacking with 6 different shutter speeds. My other settings: first delay min 0, first delay sec 0, shoot interval min 0, shoot interval sec 0, num of repeats 1, endless 0, sing/cont/time/burst 1, Tv exposures 11, Focus exposures 10, brack tv/foc/both 2, light/dark/alt 2, num of 1/3 EV 3, equal/auto/digi 0, focus step 50, all the rest default.

I also have problems with longer shutter speeds because it doesn't seem to follow the same pattern. One thing that has occured is that the script doesn't follow the "num of 1/3 EV steps" that I have set to 3. It can take pictures with shutterspeeds of both 0,3sec and 0,4sec even though it's supposed to use differences of 1 EV.

Post the list of parameter values you are using.

I don't know what it is exactly that you are trying to accomplice but to get 3 stacks with a 2EV exposure difference between them, I used the following settings:

In Canon menu, set to continuous mode.
In Timelapse script use the following settings:

Number of repeats                     1
Endless mode N/Y                      0
Single/Cont/Time/Burst              1
Tv exposures                             3
Focus exposures                        1
Bracket Tv/foc/Both                   2
Light/Dark/Alternate                  2
Num of 1/3 EV steps                  6
Equal/auto/digi 0/2                    1
Focus-step                              50
digiscope focus ref                  500
Blank screen N/Y                      0
Shutdown N/auto/USB               0
Save stack N/Y                         1
Sunrise mode                           0
TXT/CSV                                  0

These are the resulting stacks, stacked with a trail version of Helicon Focus

Hi Frans and thanks for your reply. To David and Frans: this is not quite the stack I am looking for but to make an example I used the same settings as Frans:

Number of repeats                     1
Endless mode N/Y                      0
Single/Cont/Time/Burst              1
Tv exposures                             3
Focus exposures                        1
Bracket Tv/foc/Both                   2
Light/Dark/Alternate                  2
Num of 1/3 EV steps                  6
Equal/auto/digi 0/2                    1
Focus-step                              50
digiscope focus ref                  500
Blank screen N/Y                      0
Shutdown N/auto/USB               0
Save stack N/Y                         1
Sunrise mode                           0
TXT/CSV                                  0

Camera in continous mode and macro. Here are the results and I think it gets worse the more Tv exposures I add. Look especially on the last one:

P.S. I'm really looking to get really long exposure times included in the stacking, e.g. 15 seconds. I'm trying to shoot a similar picture as Frans posted above but with the main difference of it being comletely dark outside and the door (window) is open.

In the beginning I replaced the CHDK diskboot file with the SDM file and then downloaded the script. Was this enough?

Hi Guys

that discussion was very interesting, i am setting up a year long time lapse project filming the development of a meadow over a whole year, i was going to use and old Nikon Coolpix 995 connected to a 12v battery topped up by a solar panel. I have a small circuit with a light detector and a timer so the camera only comes on in daylight hours and and then takes a shot every 15 mins. The camera turns off completely in between to save power and it works really well....up to a point. My ancient camera only has a 128Mb capacity and at that rate i'd going back every couple of days to change the camera.

I thought i could do the same thing with an A560 i have, with an intervalometer script running. I have loaded ULTRA Intervalometer and set the script to autorun and the camera to start up correctly with the Make card bootable command but when ever I test it to see if it will work the camera starts in PLAYBACK mode and i need to press the Play button for it to start. The only exception to this is if there are no images on the card, in which case it launches the script and takes a few shots.

Obviously i only need one shot when it starts up but at the moment I can't get over this hurdle. Any suggestions from anyone?

Cheers
