You can use a window shade (soft curtain?... I don't know the proper name in english)

or

you can get a light tent from ebay, arround $20USD

or

you can make the light tent yourself, all you need is a cardboard box and white paper. A much better design http://filebox.vt.edu/users/kmckevin/itma_kevin/projrep/lightbox.swf

have fun

Maybe these links could help.

In general, it is better to use diffused lightning and isolate the camera by sheet of paper with the hole for lenses.
For example, you could make a paper cylinder, put your object inside of it, set a lightning outside and shoot throught a hole. Like this:

maybe a polarization filter will help? if it's not a metallic object, of course.

Thanks for the ideas.  I guess my intuition had me on the right track, as this was taken in a darkened room with only the indirect light that was reflected on to the subject from the walls of a styrofoam box.  Crude experiments on focusing through a pin hole have so far failed, so I am trying to build a stable setup that will allow me to adjust the 'reflection shield' into posisition after composing the shot.
