Apple Macintosh installing CHDK Help. Read all before proceeding.
Unzipping Files:
The Mac OS is playing safe, (as a security feature), by quarantining files that have been obtained from
internet sites and CHDK &/or camera won't understand that, If you want control over that you can use
a different default file expander to unzip globally, (Mac Unarchiver is the OS default, and can be
changed) or you can use another, such as Stuffit Expander on an individual basis by using
(right / control click) "Open with".
Installing Files:
For SD cards 4Gb or larger It has been found to be quicker and simpler to use the Mac installer script
you can get here -
http://www.zshare.net/download/6271742634e93103/ to just prepare the SD card, Insert the
SD card to a card reader and connect to the computer, when the card volume is visible on the desktop run
the Mac installer script, If an error dialogue appears after running the installer script, just stop and see if
two card volumes (empty) have appeared on the Mac desktop, (and they should be, It partitions the card
and makes it bootable), the small volume is named CHDK, and the larger one CANON. After unzipping,
(see note above) drag and drop (out of the CHDK download folder) the CHDK files that came with the
download for your camera, (DISKBOOT.BIN etc) onto the 2 partitions.
DISKBOOT.BIN, PSFI2, and vers.req onto the smaller 4Mb partition, and the other files onto the larger partition. For CHDK to autoboot, lock the
SD card with the slider tab on the side of the card, insert the card into the camera and switch power on.
The blue LED in the print button will flash and the CHDK logo (splash screen) will show in the LCD for
about 2 seconds indicating CHDK has loaded, after that happens press the print button* and the <ALT>
indicator will show at the bottom of the LCD screen, then press the menu button to show the CHDK menu,
and away you go, you can now use CHDK to modify the operation of the camera. Remember to Read The
Manual, found here -
http://drop.io/CHDK_Quick_Start_User_Guide_ * The button may be another assigned one on some cameras.
To manually load CHDK, leave the SD card unlocked, switch into playback mode and then use
"Firm Update", see
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_User_Manual#Using_CHDK For Firm Update be sure batteries are well charged, or the camera might refuse.
Cleaning the card of hidden unwanted Mac stuff:
It is recommended to remove hidden Mac files that are left on the memory card, such as .Trashes, .DS_Store,
.localized, .fseventsd, .Spotlight-V100, as they can / will interfere with the installation. There are a number of
applications to do this, "AppleOff" is just one, is free, and works ok.
Disclaimer:
These details worked ok on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, but as usual, it is at your risk
to use these instructions. Formatting a memory card will erase files!
If followed correctly I will be surprised if this does not work, It should be ok for most cameras that have
dual partition support, but let me know if you see something that should be changed.
