My soundcard microphone input uses a 3.5mm stereo jack plug.

The tip is a red wire, the ring a white wire and shield is bare copper.

The tip and ring both have 2V bias on them so I can use the ring bias instead of a battery.

Before we go any further, open the sound-control icon in your system tray and set input to microphone.
Start your scope programme.

Adjust settings until you see a rough sine wave.

(make sure the microphone volume control is not set to zero !)

Touch the red/blue wires and the amplitude of the wave should increase .. right off the screen.

Get that working first.

(because you already have one resistor fitted, your circuit will be less sensitive than mine at picking-up 'noise' for this test).

Your post did not reveal if another type of resistor is needed for completion though.

I said that you should do the test I mentioned first to make sure your scope programme works properly.

Then, try the simplest circuit shown in reply #21.

Connect longer lead of phototransistor to the bare copper wire and other lead to red/blue.

It may not be necessary to obtain any more parts.

Do you have an external power supply for your camera ?

It may be on for a long time while you are dumping.

I have no idea if the battery will last long enough or not.

I guess you will just have to try.
