Hi ERR, first of all thanks for your work (I won't say hard because you're prolly a pretty smart individual).

I have a quick question for you and all that are active on this forum and please feel free to forward me to another section of the board if the members frown upon the placement of my question...here goes:

  • I have the G11 (sweet camera!) and after much time wasted trying to figure out a way to format my Sandisk SDHC (8gB) card using the built-in card readers on my Windows and Mac laptops I decided I better just buy the dang card reader!
  • Anyhow, I successfully followed this tutorial (formatted disk with a 10mB partition and the second partition as 7.4gB calling them CHDK BOOT and CHDK SOURCE, respectively.
  • After that, I used Terminal in the MAC to make the first partitioned sector of the disk bootable.
  • Next I copied the BootSector.bin and PS.FI2 to the CHDK BOOT portion of the disk and the CHDK (for 1.00L) build and vers.req files to the CHDK SOURCE portion of the disk.
  • Finally, I locked the card, inserted the card into my G11, turned on the G11, went to Play/Review mode, pressed my alt+menu key combination and nothing...

Note, I got CHDK working earlier by copying both CHDK (1.00L) builds to both partitioned sectors of my card, but at 10mB it soon ran out of room to write to and did not automatically begin writing to the larger partition of my card...so it appears I must need CHDK on BOTH partitions of the card and I still need to figure out how to get CHDK to jump to the other card upon booting...

Any ideas why I can't get CHDK to boot per the directions on the MacFAQ?  I'd appreciate anyone's experience with a card >4gB!! :-[

  • Next I copied the BootSector.bin and PS.FI2 to the CHDK BOOT portion of the disk and the CHDK (for 1.00L) build and vers.req files to the CHDK SOURCE portion of the disk.
1) The PS.FI2 file is not needed/working on the G11. So no need to copy it (but it does not hurt if you copy it on the sd-card, it takes only useless space on the sd-card).
2) After partitioning and making the sd-card bootable, you have to copy the diskboot.bin file to the first(boot) partition of the sd-card.

Thanks, I'll double-check that i've done that (I believe I have - not sure if I mentioned it above and I'm at work right now so I'll have to check when i get home).  what does the PS.FI2 file do??

Sorry, I meant to say DISKBOOT.bin; it was just a typo on my end.  CHDK works, but it still won't swap to my 7.8gB portion to perform the write image routine...

If anyone can refer me to a link for other persons setting up partitions on an SDHC card (>4gB) then I would be stoked!  I assume this build supports the SDHC cards...when the disk is full after on or three shots how does CHDK know to switch over to the other partition or how come CHDK doesn't switch over when it captures the very first shot???  I'm confused...

CHDK does not "switch" over from one to another partition during shooting.
During boot, CHDK checks if there is a second FAT32 partition avalaible. If so,
ONLY this second partition is used to store the pictures.

If you still got the pictures on the first (small) partition, you did something wrong by creating the SD-CARD.
Maybe the second parition is not created, or not correctly formated, so that chdk is not able to detect a second
FAT32 partition and has to use the first small partition.

If you have access to a windows pc,  simply use the SDM-Installer. It will creates a corrected formated dual-partition SD-Card by a push of a button.

Newbie here, but have an oddball question.  I'm runing v. J on a H firmware g11.  How do you keep the green focus box from disappearing when shooting?  When I exit chdk, it works normally.  Thx

Hi there, Jerrich! First of all, why are you using the "J"-version of CHDK with the "H"-version of the Cam?
Makes no sense to me. Please download and use the correct version, maybe your problem will vanish without a trace...

Thanks for the reply.  When searching for the correct version, there wasn't an "H" and a footnote to use "J".
I would like the green focus box to not disappear when shutter is pressed.  I might have a setting wrong somewhere, since there are 10,000 !!  :)

Is it possible to make the G-11 remote capture using CHDK and the factory usb cord? I use 'capture one' which you can fire off the camera via the laptop and would love to have the G-11 be able to utilise this.

I think i dont understand the problem. The focus box only goes green if you half press the shooting button in shooting mode (and the camera is able to find focus in the area). What exactly do you mean with exit chdk?. Leaving the ALT-Mode via ALT-Key, or booting the camera without CHDK? If you are in ALT-Mode, i dont expect that you can focus via shooting button, because this button is used to start scripts in ALT-Mode.
