Opening custom-size DNG files.

Using a modified version of CHDK, I am creating an in-camera DNG image from parts of eight separate images.
Obviously, the header contains modified information.

RawTherapee, Picasa and IrfanView open the DNG files but CS4 does not.

How do I open the DNG files with CS4  ?

Photoshop uses "camera raw" plugin for opening dng files. If this plugin works correctly, probably your file has some invalid tags . Dcraw (=RawTherapee, Picasa, IrfanView) is less strict than Adobe and can open such files. You can validate dng file using dng_validate.exe tool from Adobe DNG SDK and/or upload such file somewhere.

probably your file has some invalid tags .

CS4 did not like me using the real ActiveArea of the sensor.
I had to set it to the size of the synthesised image.
I then had to define a suitable crop size and crop origin.

Incidentally, the dng verifier produced these warnings :-

DateTime is not a valid date/time
DateTime is not null-terminated
DateTime has non-ASCII characters.
