Problems installing CHDK on a SD1100

I got a SD1100 for Christmas. This week-end I tried to put CHKD on it. The SD card is 8Gb, I use linux and have a card reader. First, I created a ver.req file in the root directory of the partition. My firmware is 1.01a.

I downloaded the corresponding autobuild. I backed up the pictures and used gparted to create a 24 mb FAT16 partition with a bootable flag before the 8Gb FAT32 partition. It went right, the pictures are still there. The boot partition is seen as the second partition by linux though, don't know why.

I put in DISKBOOT.BIN in the boot partition and tried the camera. Nothing special happened, no new menu etc. Problem, it now says that there are "No Images" when I press play (the files are still there, the directory structure is intact)

I removed the FAT16 partition, there is now 24MB of empty space followed by the FAT32 partition with the DCIM folder, the pictures, etc.

I put the card back in the camera, still "No pictures". Damn!

Any idea what is going wrong?

with a bootable flag

The FAT16 bootable flag is not the same as the BOOTDISK string in the filesystem header. The latter one is a "hack" introduced by canon. Try inserting the BOOTDISK thing as described here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card#Linux:

Furthermore, i'm not so sure the SD1100 chdk already supports the multi partition approach.. Create a 4GB fat16 partition for the time being

@Arthur B.

The SD1100 don't have multi partition support yet, so only FAT16 formatted cards up to 4GB can be used.

So as Hacki said, try it either with a small FAT16 formatted partition on your 8GB card (FAT32 can't be used !) or use a smaller (<= 4GB) SD card. You can format cards up to 2GB directly in the camera, 4GB cards must be formatted manually with FAT16 since the camera would do it with FAT32...

For making a SD card bootable with a disk editor you'll find some helpful screenshots here: German: Bootkennung.

...and don't forget to LOCK (write protect) the SD card before you put it in the camera !

I did try to write BOOTDISK directly at the beginning of the partition, it doesn't change anything. Playing with the manual lock on the card doesn't do anything either. I am going to try with  a single 4GB FAT16 partition.

How did you do that with the BOOTDISK flag? Show a screenshot of hexedit with the open partition, maybe..

I'm glad I finally found this post. I was trying forever to get multi-partitioning working with my sd1100. I guess it is not supported yet. I think that should be added to the wiki instructions that not all models support multi-partitioning. If it is already there, I certainly didn't see it. Sigh.

Hello & welcome, AngryMathDave !

Quote from: the CHDK wikia, SD1100 page:
The SD1100IS do not have multipartition support, the autostart method is only supported up to 4GB cards;
starting CHDK with the "Firmware Update" menu item works also with cards > 4GB
