I believe what i'm asking is actually already solved using the "zoom shoot" script.  but i just need confirmation that this script has been done.  the links show the advantages of having DOF stack.  i haven't done any zoom stacks yet as i don't know what to stack!

It is possible stacking of CHDK DOF. In the German forum, there is already a working script Susi2Stack
