Raw average

RAW average: I know this topic has been discussed earlier, but i haven't found all the answers I've been looking for.
It seems that RAW averaging gives great results (sharper detail, less noise), but is there any way to average RAWs not in the camera (because it's slow) but in computer (because it might be faster/handy).
I know I can load my RAWs into photoshop, make layers and stuff, but is there some simpler way (without using such a heavy tank like PS)?

One could write a simple program for PC.

In Picasa Edit mode: Open multiple files by clicking on RAW files

Create > Picture collage> Settings > Multiple Exposure

No fancy controls, but super fast and FREE!

It would be pretty trivial to make a tool that does the equivalent of in camera raw operations on the PC. It's actually on my wish list of things to do, but I'm totally swamped with real work at the moment.

For this kind of operation, working with the raw values before demosaicing should give the best results.

so is it necessary to deal with those files in camera? or do you mean that using raws instead of jpg is essential?

Using raw instead of jpg is essential in general. Whatever processing is possible in camera it is all the more possible on PC.

No. The raw files would be used in any case so running the same code on a PC would be a much better idea.

I would expect it to give slightly better results. The noise affects the individual red, green or blue pixels in the raw. If you average the raw, you reduce the noise before it's been spread around by the debayering process, and before any precision has been lost.
