Following the instructions on page 104 of the advanced manual I depress the ring release button and try to turn the ring counterclockwise but I cannot budge it.  Too tight?  Also I tried a little to turn it clockwise (tighten).

My camera has had a hard life but still works well.

What do you suppose is keeping me from loosening the ring.  Camera body bent a tiny little bit?  Operator error?

For what it's worth, I tried a couple times to do this on my A590, and couldn't get it to move.  The big problem seems to be getting a grip on the ring - it's too slick.  But since this was just a curiosity thing for me (no adapter to put on), I didn't really make an effort.  Maybe a thin band of friction tape or adhesive tape around it would give a better grip.

It's a bit tricky on A590, that's true - not just pushing the lock down, but also inward (towards the ring)
