External power to A620

I've just stepped into the world of CHDK, and doing especially time lapse tests.

I managed to take over 4000 pics (one pic in 15 secs) with one set of old AA NiMH batteries but it's not enough. I can't use external power supply (AC) because mostly I'll be taking time lapse pics far away from mains.

Canons own AC adapter (ACK600) gives 4.3 volts, but is it safe to use 6V gel battery connected to DC IN port of A620? I think it would be safe because fresh set of alkalines gives over 6V. Not interested to use 12V gel battery with regulator.

Thanks for your answers!

Welcome Boojum !

Yes, it is.

That is what I use and recommend.

I use a 1.7/4mm plug :-

just one warning - check first voltage on your battery, i had 6v 4,5Ah/20HR and on full charge it burnt one of the fuse on my A620. Voltage on battery was 6,45V and it was enough for disaster, so be careful.

Yes, that did occur to me after posting.

I have actually been using a 6V mains adapter rather than a 6V battery.

I would heatshrink one  or two IN4001 diodes in series in the +ve supply lead.

Hello, I have a question related to the connection of the (+) and (-) terminals of the external battery, wich one goes to the center pin?
I am planning of doing this for a A720 IS.

Sorry for my english, thanks in advance.

On all the supported cameras, the outside of the plug is negative and the inside positive.

Make sure you use a suitable voltage.

Best to slow with a lowish voltage.

Thanks for your reply!!

I am going to use an LM317 voltage regulator to reach the 3.15V required for the A720 and try some time lapse!
