S5IS turns off when raw is selected and gphoto2 capture-image

I am trying to use gphoto2 on FreeBSD with an S5IS.  I am able to capture images if the raw image is not selected, but if I turn on raw images, it turns the camera off immediately after writing the JPEG+raw images to disk. This happens with both the s5is-101a-0.9.9-866 and s5is-101b-0.9.9-866 builds.

FWIW 101a and 101b correspond to different canon firmware versions. You need to use the one that matches your cameras canon firmware version.

I own two S5IS cameras, one with the 1.01A firmware, one with 1.01B firmware.  Both of them exhibit this behavior of turning off after writing the RAW image to disk when the image capture is triggered by gphoto2.  I haven't checked to see if the same thing occurs  on a year old S5IS 1.01A CHDK firmware that I probably have on another SD card. The other Canon camera I have apparently does not support remote capture commands.

The cameras won't even turn on if the wrong CHDK firmware is on the SD card.

OK, that makes sense, I was wondering how you tested both ;)

The crashing is probably caused either by the time it takes to save raw, or by the mere presence of the files.

You can try different prefixes/extensions for raw, which may solve the issue if the presence of the files is causing the problem. If it's the time, then you are out of luck.

If you know a bit of C and are up to mucking with the CHDK source, there's a few other things you could try. The first would be to force the raw to save outside of the DCIM tree. The second would be put in a delay loop in place of the raw saving, taking and try various times to see if it triggered the crash. You could also dump out the canon crash log, which might provide useful clues.

BTW, I can take JPG+RAW images manually. I don't think I'm up to mucking with the source, but I'd dump out the canon crash log if you could give me a pointer on how to get it.
