S2 IS and SDHC Memory.

I scored and S2 off of Craigslist for dirt cheap... The camera has the original 16mb memory card. (Dorito's chip.)
The CHDK works great!
However, I am needing a larger memory card to record video and take large format photos.

This is not as easy as it sounds.

Sandisk basic SDHC cards do not provide read/write speeds on the packaging anymore... The guy at BustBuy told me that the write speeds are 5mbps... (Not that I really trust a BustBuy's sales lackey...) I have been putting off the higher memory because I cannot figure out what the relay rate of transfer is between my camera and the miniature solid state memory card. I am not even sure where to find this info... (Although writing this thread made me think of Googling Digic II.)

So... I have been to Tom's Hardware to read about benchmarks. (Which is absolutely useless information because it only tells you how fast the card is, but not what the camera can spit out.) I checked out the WIKI-CHDK on the speeds of different SD cards and the 4GB limitation for CHDK... (Not understanding about this either.)

I can get a dirt cheap 2GB card but I like lots of space. I can get a 4GB but, my hangup is #1. Will my camera accept a 4GB card? #2. If I drop a few more dollars for an SanDisk EXTREME III, would there be any difference noticed between that of a cheap card and that which can write at faster speeds? #3. Is there a page on CHDK's Wiki site that explains what the limits are of each Digic processor... What are their max write speeds?

This would all help me to decide what 4GB card to get, but then if the read/write speeds are the only thing holding access to larger capacity cards... Like 32GB, then wouldn't a large capacity card work in my camera?

There doesn't seem to be a lot of info about re-formatting the card to different storage chunks other than FAT16, why not FAT 32 or FAT 8... Does it have to do with the camera's processor? or read ability?

...anyway this is what I discovered on the way to buy some memory and now I have stymied myself.

-BTW, I discovered that memory cards are a hella lot cheaper online than in the local stores!

Okay, nevermind. I got it.

Digic II processors can only read up to 5.8mbps so getting anything over 5mbps is not going to do much to the transfer speed... and this slow read speed must be why you have to use FAT 16 chunks and why you are limited to how much storage you can use... (Still not completely sure on the last part, but the first part let me know that the guy at BustBuy is full of B.S.)

Hi !

The user manual for S2is does not mention SDHC, so i don't think it will support it; SDHC support is dependant on the sort of card reader/writer in the camera.
That means that all cards of 2 GB and smaller will work with your cam, although some 4 GB non-SDHC cards exist.
If you want a 4 GB card, you should definitely test it or have the retailer guarantee that it's NOT SDHC.

No.
Digic II based cameras can read much faster than that, also the writing speed can be higher...

No.
There's not really a difference in speed between FAT12 / FAT16 / FAT32, at least not with images; FAT16 can also be faster than FAT32...

FAT12 / FAT16 is only needed for the "autostart" CHDK loading mechanism (with diskboot.bin & locked card), the Canon firmware function for this only supports FAT12/FAT16.
Manually loaded (with "Firmware Update" from the Canon menu), CHDK can be started from all partition types the camera (Canon) supports.
FAT16 ist limited to ~2GB with a cluster size of 32kB; with the larger cluster size of 64kB up to 4GB are possible - this is not supported by some devices, but ALL Powershots work fine with 64k clusters.
64kB clusters are supported on MS OS since Windows NT / 98, also all other OS's nowadays work with this cluster size.

The S2 do NOT support SDHC cards, only SD-cards, as whim stated; so all SD cards with 4GB WILL, SDHC cards do NEVER work on the S2 (You'll get an card error message by the Canon firmware).

Good thing I waited to buy memory then! Thank you and thank you for the reply!

***I was getting my info via wikipedia on Digic II... I am sure that it can read faster, but then it still does not make sense to get a higher read/write speed card if the S2 can't read/write the card.***

Okay, you're right, I am thinking of the format cluster and indexing speed of a HD.

I wonder why these SDHC cards were not made backward compatible... I am not too sure that you can buy straight SD cards off the shelf anymore... all of the San Disk cards I looked at had an HC under the SD (I think... Today I will double check.)

Thanks for the reply.

Okay... I am back from the store and decided to drop $12.00 for instant gratification. I picked up a 2GB SD card from BustedBuy and now I can take up to 750 photos at full 5MP resolution.

Thanks for the responses... I am off to master a few features on the S2.
