Source Control - Why is the platform code duplicated?

I can understand that based on how the branches came to be that the code for each camera would end up duplicated into various file. Has there been any thought into pulling the trunk/platform/* and the loader/* code outside of the branches, or perhaps leaving it in trunk and having the branches just reference it there?
