hmmmm, i just figured a possible bummer effect of the way CDHK loads, strangely i don't see anybody talkin
g about that :

i own a SX200IS and have been messing around with CDHK recently, and now, as my battery is half full, the firmware-updating system tells me to change my battery pack,

i assume to avoid bricking your camera with a power loss during actual flashing, that would be understandable,


but then, am i doomed to never turn off my camera, or being unable tu use CHDK from the second half of my battery life?

is the auto boot solving this issue?

Hi nickie, welcome to the forum!

First things first:
When loading CHDK, you are not actually flashing any firmware to the camera. The firmware-updating thing is just a method to fool the camera into loading CHDK program along it's own firmware. But the memory where the firmware resides is never touched. So, if the power goes down while loading CHDK, the camera just turns itself off. All you have to do then is change the batteries and the thing will power up without problems. No bricking the camera there.

Now, the thing with the half full battery:
If the camera tells you to change the battery pack, it may means that the batteries are discharged. So, maybe they are not half full as you think. My guess is that you base that assumption on CHDK's battery indicator. If that's the case, it may not be calibrated to your particular battery pack. To adjust the battery indicator, follow the instructions in CHDK's manual.

hi, i know that i am not flashing the camera, but i still face the same security function as if i was about to actually flash,
 at that precise moment, only the flashing function of the camera asks me to change the battery, the camera works fine and reports me 2bars out of three, so i believe CHDK's indicator ,

but i'll double-check with calibration, to be totally totally sure :)

@nickie,
if I understand you,
it sounds like Canon software is asking for a fully charged battery, before the CHDK software is loaded.

I have never seen this but I can believe it, you could use the auto-boot method.
This loads CHDK without using the canon "update" method.

Follow the details on the main Wiki site, auto-boot and dual partition support are available for the SX200.

hmmm, oldgit, i see you mention a 200is in your signature, i also have the 1.00C firmware, and yet you haven't experienced that issue?

I was involved in the port for the SX200 and during the porting...testing....updating...testing...etc
No, nobody has ever mentioned this, even after many many re-starts during testing.

You may also want to check / clean the battery contacts (also in the battery compartment VERY CAREFULLY).

I would then charge the battery fully, start CHDK, calibrate the battery settings in CHDK and try it.

I don't think that this is CHDK linked, I think it is canon doing the check, hence I would check the battery contacts first.

This is a somewhat known feature of some cameras, including my a570is.

We can only assume that the firmware of some cameras refuse to enter fw update (which is the mechanism we have to fool the camera to start CHDK either manually or automatically even though firmware is never actually flashed) when the battery is not full enough. Furthermore, it would appear that these cameras also shut down more keenly due to low battery while running CHDK.

CHDK battery indicator configuration does not affect this behavior in any way.
