Definitive "off" for af-assist-beam

I'm owning a G11... (FW:1J)

unfortunately, if I deactivate the af assist beam (the white LED) in the canon menu, it will only affect the no-flash-mode. If I want to use the (internal) flash, the assist beam comes up.

This is annoying, if I want to take a candid shot of children and pets.

Well... I could use black electrical tape to shut down the lampf... but it should easily be possible, to absolutely deactivate this LED feature via CHDK.

Do other canon cameras with assist LED behave the same?
any bad photo is much better than any photo not shot...

Hej,
I can't seem to be able to desactivate it either on my SX10 IS.

Hej,
It even seems that my SX10 IS changes the focus while in MF mode. :/

Yes; AF assist LED gets automatically active when the flash is opened, although the Canon setting is off.
...place your thumb over the LED ;)

Hej,
It annoyed me while light painting...
For some reason, I set MF and 2s delay for the shot, manual exposure and thus manual flash power, but still pressing the shutter doesn't shoot right after, it searches for something. ://
