Hello!

I am wondering. I am interested in time lapse (I did it twice ~1200 pictures in total) and I think the effect is really nice. But I have a question regarding how it affects the shutter life ?

I recently found CHDK (really nice program) for my Powershot A620. In testing purpose I took 2000 pictures in a week. Now I am wondering, my camera has taken about 7200 shots since summer 2006. Now that I am using CHDK and want to do time lapse this number could quickly increase.

As DSLR usually admit 25000-50000 clicks until the shutter's death I think on a compact camera the number should be lower no?

What do you think ?

My a570 shot counter is at about 122700 these days, and this is not an unusual achievement at all. The majority of my shots have been taken in manual focus mode timelapses or bursts with single focus per burst -- I have no clue how many shots I've stressed the focus mechanism with.

But you are rightfully worried and if you can't afford to lose your camera, don't overstress it... the quality of inexpensive cameras could vary greatly and your luck could be worse than mine.

Anyway, I'd expect DSLR shutters to be significantly larger, heavier and more complex and hence harder to design for long life.

Hej,
The shutter isn't mechnical, it's electronical, so I you can shoot millions of pics with it, I guess.

No, it's a combination of both... otherwise the camera shouldn't emit any noise while shooting with locked focus and aperture. And even if whatever moves wouldn't technically be a shutter, it's still something that will eventually fail...

On the cameras that I have looked at, the shutter is a pivoted piece of blackened spring-steel shim that is attracted to one of two electromagnets by a brief pulse.

A tiny rod magnet then keeps that shutter in position until another pulse attracts it to the second magnet.

The exposure-timing is electronic but after exposure the mechanical shutter closes while charge is transferred from the CCD.

I would think it will last a very long time, certainly far longer than a DSLR shutter.

Ok so you think an DSLR shutter has a shorter life span since it's heavier and more complicated than a P&S camera.

I think it should be right. So do you know how many clicks you did with your camera ?

I don't know how to see how many pictures i did with my camera, thks for saying that to me...... but i'm sure that i did more than 100000 picts...
Before CHDK, i did timelapses with continuous mode...now it's easier... My problem is that the button use to take photos is down now...it's always in "half pressure" position...so i fix it by pasting some kind of glu which become hard like stone in few seconds...so now i can pull the button...
With CHDK, it's not a problem, let's take another camera and hack it...thanks CHDK!!!

Just look at the file numbers. I think it's reseted every 10'000.
