DOF stacking help

I'm using DOF stacking script to create image s like this:

http://picasaweb.google.com/barret8/Inne#5445996797568569218

However, because i don't use 'normal' macro mode, i had to modify the script so i can use it with max zoom setting (i use reversed old 58mm lens to achieve this magnification). I use 10mm or 100mm step, because smaller steps with such zoom setting is useless.

Everything works fine, but the problem is setting start value of focus. I need to hunt for correct setting by choosing different values, starting the script, verifying results, change settings, and so on.

What i would like to know is the value of current manual focus in camera mm units. This way i could just set the manual focus to start value, read it, set it inside the script, and start the script.

That would greatly improve the whole process. is it possible to display this value on screen?

i'm not sure if all this is clear for you, so if not then ask :)

greets

indeed, it looks like this information (F: - Focus distance in meters) is already available in standard CHDK :)
i think that's what i was looking for :) thanks a lot! i'll test it today.

You may be interested to know that with SDM we do this without a script.

In Bracketing\Overrides menu, focus-mode is set to AUTO.

You focus on nearest point and press the button.

SDM then  takes multiple exposures until infinity focus is reached.
The distance at each focus step is displayed at the top of the screen.
The required focus-step is calculated from the current focus position.
Initially, it may just be one mm steps.
After about one metre, only a few steps are needed to reach infinity.

No scripts .. just press the button.

I would be very interested in your script. I'm just starting to do the same thing.

I've done the close up bit:

Now I want to move to focus stacking (and probably RAW mode, to avoid JPEG artefacts are MAX magnification)

i wouldn't be so concerned about jpeg artifacts. what's worrying me is stacking artifacts that appear on edges of objects, caused by blurred images from beginning/end of sequence (you can see that on my match picture).

is there any way to avoid this? i'm using combineZP.

Hmm. Those are caused by areas where combineZM can't find "better data" than the blur. Since the background is also blurred, that's (on the face of it) reasonable.

I don't know how to do better - I've yet to do ANY DOF stacking at all!
