I'm wondering if there's a way to use the usb port as a hot shoe of sorts,
or if i must purchase a new camera!

I don't know if they can do it via CHDK, but until then, there's always this $33.50 solution: Speedotron DS-1 Flash Activated Digital Slave Trigger with Hot Shoe Mount. You might find them cheaper elsewhere.

Any way to use this without triggering your pop up flash (I know, I know, just asking).
