Scripting possibilities

Hi everyone,

I have been reading up on some CHDK scripts and had some observations.

Some scripts, or sections of some scripts, can deactivate the camera's autofocus and render the camera to a preset (fixed) focused distance. Is this possible with, or can scripts be written for, most PowerShot cameras, especially PowerShot G11 or SX20IS?

Some scripts, or sections of some scripts, are able to "count/quantify" steps within the zoom range of the camera zoom lens, and then zoom in or zoom out as instructed by the scripting parameters. Is this possible with, or can scripts be written for, most PowerShot cameras, especially PowerShot G11 or SX20IS?

Canon EOS cameras can do tethered shooting through Canon EOS Utility software, but Canon PowerShot cameras can't. Can scripts be written such that the PowerShot can do tethered shooting? (Tethered shooting is photographing images, but instead of saving to a memory card, it is transferred by USB cable into a folder in a IBM-PC computer.)

I would greatly appreciate any information/input on this matter.

CHDK script can override focus on any fully functional port

The number of zoom steps available is determined as part of the porting process, and will be available to scripts in any fully functional port. Script can set zoom to any available step.

I suggest reading the scripting documentation on the wiki for further information. You may also want to download and examine some of the completed scripts in the scripting forum.

Some powershot cameras can be controlled remote using native canon functions, either through a program written using the canon SDK or gphoto. I'm not sure whether this includes capturing directly over USB or not, but you should be able to copy/delete images if needed.

Another option is eyefi http://www.eye.fi/ or similar.

There is also experimental support for USB control natively in CHDK. Again this wouldn't support capturing jpegs directly over USB, but copy/delete could give you the same effect. This is highly experimental, not in main line CHDK, and is only supported on some cameras. See http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,4338.0.html
Don't forget what the H stands for.
