Welcome Graham !

I have an A620, just try the 100f version.

If the camera hangs, remove the batteries and try the semi-official Canon firmware-update  :-

If you do this, make sure the batteries are fresh or fully-charged.

Unlike CHDK, this really does change the camera firmware.

I have also done this procedure.
