Canon SX110 IS CHDK Install

I'm new to CHDK, just got a SX110 and it has a firmware version GM1.00B.  I have used Card Tricks to install the correct (and only firmware) firmware for the SX110 and made it "autoboot".  When I went to turn on the camera, it wouldn't turn on.  I did some more forum searching and decided to unlock the card and try to manually install the firmware.  When I navigate to the menu under display, there is no new option for Firmware update.  I checked the SD card and it has the PS.FI2 file on it.  What am I doing wrong?  Help!

Hello & welcome, onurich01 !

When I went to turn on the camera, it wouldn't turn on.
Press / half-press the shutter once to switch to record mode, or hold the power button for ~1.5s.

Make sure the file's name is really ps.fi2 (on a Mac, read http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F ) and the file is placed on the card's root; start the camera in PLAYBACK (!!) mode...

I appreciate the quick response.  You advice is great, but does not match my symptoms.  The camera won't turn on at all when the card is locked, not even in playback mode, so holding the power button for a long period of time does nothing, nor does half pressing the shutter.  I can use both of those things to get the camera to record mode when I had a non-locked card in.

I checked the file name, and even renamed it, and still nothing.

I'm running Windows 7, would this make a difference?  Should I try to manually install CHDK to the SD card, without using cardtricks?  Could that be the problem?

I think that the root cause is that the camera isn't recognizing the ps.fi2 file on the card (hence the failure to autoboot), but I don't know what could be causing that.

@onurich01:
What kind of SD card are you using ?
Did you try another card ?

For autostart the card must be CHDK-bootable and FAT12/FAT16 formatted, with the file diskboot.bin in the card's root (cards > 4GB need a special multipartition setup).

The PS.FI2 file is used for manual loading, this should work with any card size...

-> backup your data/images, format the card in the camera
-> then copy the ps.fi2 file to the card's root with a file reader
-> use the card unlocked, start the camera in playback mode (lens retracted)
-> the "Firmware update" menu item should now be visible in the Canon menu (scroll down)

Notes:
This menu item is only visible when the camera is started in playback mode & a file named "ps.fi2" is stored in the card's root.
Also make sure there's at least one valid still image on the card, taken with this camera; the last displayed file in playback mode should be a still image (photo), not a video file.

Win7 should not be a problem; in CardTricks you'll see whether the card is CHDK-bootable or not...

Card Type is a 2GB SD made by Dane-Elec.  I have not tried another card yet.

The card is FAT16 formatted, and has diskboot.bin in the root.

I think we are getting somewhere though.  When I go into playback with this camera, the lens doesn't always retract.  Last night I was playing around with it and it retracted, and after that I had the Firmware Update option in the menu.  I selected it, and it said file update error (or something like that, next time I can get the lens to retract I'll actually write it down).

Anyone on here know how to make the lens retract in playback mode every time?

Okay, now we are getting somewhere.  The lens retract was a setting.  I changed it so it retracts immediately, and I get the firmware update in the menu everytime.  Next issue:

When I press Firm. Update, it says the following "Update File Error!!!"

Now that I have that to go on, I'll start searching for my problem in the forums again, but if anyone has seen this with the SX110 CHDK files let me know.

The menu item normally is available when the camera is started directly in playback mode with the [>] button ;)

When I press Firm. Update, it says the following "Update File Error!!!"
This message indicates that either the file ps.fi2 is not the correct one for this camera model/firmware (i.e. a wrong PID) or the file is corrupted.

Pls. check again:
- your camera's fw version
- the correct CHDK package for exactly this camera & firmware (e.g. mixed up SX100/SX110 while downloading ?)

Also make sure that there's no error while unpacking the download package; check the integrity of the card's filesystem (e.g. with scandisk, or better format the card again) and use the remove/eject mechanism of your OS to safely remove the card/card reader ("remove hardware" or similar under Windows).

Hi I'm a newbie. I've a Sx110. I've already tried to install chdk on 2 gb sd card. The card was empty and then I put into vers.req and ver.req. I've turned on my camera and press playback button, then func +disp and I've seen "firmware version 1.0.0.0."
Not good. The installation procedure with cardtrick didn't ended well.Chdk file are into the sd but there is no splash screen on startup and pressing alt mode no chdk menu. :(
Then I've taken the 32 mb sd card provided with the camera an I' repeat all the same steps. It recognizes the right firmware and the chdk works perfectly.
Which errors I could have done ?
Please help me.

Thanks
